5.b Painting your Stove or Stove Pipe
Ifyouarepaintingyourvitreousuetomatchthestovecolourortouchingupanarea
ofyourstovethereare3steps(donotuseanaerosolspraywhenthestoveislit).

Themostcriticalstepissurfacepreparation.Thepaintwilladheretothesurfacecoat,
ifthereisrust,itwillfail.Ifthestove/uehasacoatingthatispeeling,blisteringor
chalkinginanyway,thetopcoatwillreleaseinthesameway.Ifthereisoil/grease/
contaminantthepaintwillnotadhere.
Trouble shooting
Paintcomingoinpatchesindicatesaproblemwithsurfacepreparation.The
remedyistoremovethepaint,preparethesurfaceandstartagain.
1. Preparing the surface
• Removeallrustbysandblasting,sandingorgrinding.IFYOUAPPLYONTOP
OFRUSTthepaintwilladheretotherustandfail.Anewstove/ueshould
arriverustfree,thiswillonlyberelevantifyouarerenovatinganoldstove
• Removeoil,grease,contaminants.Newuecanarrivewithachemicalonthe
surfaceusedduringthemanufacturingprocess.Werecommendtheuseofan
acetonebasedpaintthinnerandthatyoukeythesurfacewithnesandpaper.

2. Applying the paint (vapour and propellant are flammable, avoid all naked flames and sparks)
• Bestresultsareachievedwhenthepaint,thestove/uesurfaceandtheair
temp.arebetween18°C/66°F-29°C/85°F.Youcanwarmacoldcanofpaint
byrunningahottapoveritfor2minutes.DONOTexposetoames
• Shakethepaintfor2minutestothoroughlymixthepigments,metallics
andsolvents
• Doatestsprayontoapieceofcardboard,therstspraycanbemostly
propellantwithnopigment
• Applytherstof2-3lightcoats.Therstcoatshouldbeamistcoat(itwill
looklikedotsonthesurface).Applyfrom12-15inches,ifyouaretooclosethe
paintwilldrip/run,ifyouaretoofarawayyouwillgetagrittynish
