Keep Up Your Electrical System
Keep your Chevy or GMC truck’s electrical system in shape! Nothing is more embarrassing than showing
up at a cruise-in or car show with a beautiful truck that doesn’t run well, or fails to start when you hit the key.
Make sure your fan belt is properly tightened. Carefully clean the battery cable ends, and don’t put
grease or other goo on the battery posts. Inspect and tighten all wire connections; including the vital
ground straps. Make sure you have a good, functioning voltage regulator and generator (or alternator).
Charge your battery, and have it tested by professionals with testing equipment. Check ignition wires for
corrosion, and use a meter to check for conductivity. Look for cracks or carbon lines in your distributor
cap and rotor. Replace points, condenser, and rotor annually. Examine your spark plugs for evidence of
clean firing… or problems. If you’re not sure how to do the testing, get a manual from this Obsolete Chevy
Parts catalog, or take your truck to a skilled professional mechanic. Then, the next time you get ready to
go to a car show, you’ll know your truck is as ready as you are.
