ClutCH Parts
Clutch assemblies are fairly simple, straight-forward
mechanical systems… until heat and friction combine
to wear them out!
Often someone will install a new clutch disc, only to
experience chatter, slipping, or “grabbing” when they
reassemble their car or truck. The key to a smooth
operating clutch is to replace ALL the worn parts.
Often the springs in the pressure plate lose their
tension over time, allowing excessive slippage. The
little pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft is vital
too, as it is responsible for keeping the transmission
main shaft properly aligned under torque conditions.
The flywheel must have a smooth, crack and heat-spot
free surface. It’s always wise to have a machine shop
turn down the flywheel to achieve a good surface,
on every clutch replacement. (Also be sure to check
the teeth on the flywheel ring gear while you have the
flywheel out.)
The throwout bearing may look good, but it’s a good
idea to replace it every time you have it out of the
vehicle, due to the tremendous heat and friction it
must endure.
When you have good quality components in new
condition in place, then adjust the clutch according
to your shop manual. Then you can normally expect
good smooth and powerful performance from your
clutch system.
