Connector
The end of a cable that plugs
into a port or interface to
connect one device to another.
Most connectors are either
male or female.
CTI
Computer Telephony
Integration;
Refers to systems that enable a
computer to act as a call
center, accepting incoming
calls and routing them to the
appropriate device or person.
Today’s CTI systems, like
TalkSwitch, can handle a
variety of incoming and
outgoing communications
(phone calls, faxes, and
Internet messages).
Dial Tone
Tone that indicates the
equipment is ready to receive
dialed digits. The tone may be
interrupted when features like
message waiting or call
forwarding are activated.
Digit
Any whole number from 0 to 9.
The numbers on your
telephone keypad are digits.
Digital Device
Digital devices (phones,
answering machines, etc.)
convert analog sine waves to
digital signals (zeroes and
ones) for data storage or
transmission over digital lines.
The digital signal is converted
back to analogue sine waves
that the human ear can hear.
Digitize
To translate sound, video or
images into a digital format.
For sound, video and any type
of movement, digitalization is
performed by sampling at
discrete intervals. To digitize
sound, a device measures a
sound wave’s amplitude many
times per second. These
numeric values can then be
recorded digitally.
Distinctive Ring
A service provided by some
telephone companies; more
than one telephone number
reaching the same telephone
line (extensions) can be
identified by distinctive rings
(i.e. for a fax machine). Each
Distinctive Ring number has a
different ringing cadence.
TalkSwitch can detect one, two
and three ring bursts per
ringing cycle and provide
different call handling for
incoming calls with each of
these Distinctive Ring
cadences.
Driver
A program that controls a
device. Every device (printer,
disk drive, or keyboard etc.),
