46 TALKSWITCH USER GUIDE
Example: ARS could be used to route international calls to a VoIP service
provider; national fixed line calls can be routed to an alternative carrier
offering a discounted calling plan, using a carrier selection code; and calls to
cellular phones could be routed to telephone lines attached to fixed wireless
terminals for cellular-to-cellular calling. Toll Restriction could be used to
block calls to premium rate services.
ARS and Toll Restriction uses the first dialled digits (referred to as ‘leading
digits’) of the dialled telephone number to determine how the call will be
handled. Toll Restriction can block calls based on the leading digits dialled.
ARS can redirect calls to different Line Hunt Groups, based on the leading
digits dialled, and has the option of adding carrier selection prefix codes to
outgoing calls. ARS routes calls to Line Hunt Groups, which can be
configured to direct calls to separate groups of telephone lines or VoIP
trunks.
Planning Automatic Route Selection and Toll Restriction
To use ARS and Toll Restriction:
Identify the leading digits of the dialled numbers for the calls to be
redirected by ARS or blocked by Toll Restriction.
Identify which telephone lines and VoIP trunks are connected to different
service providers.
Assign telephone lines and VoIP trunks to Line Hunt Groups, to provide
separate access to each different service provider (see section 2.2.4).
Identify any carrier selection codes and time of day when they will be
used (if required).
Identify which extension’s calls will be controlled by ARS or blocked by
Toll Restriction.
If multiple units are connected to the LAN, a checkbox will appear for
the For all Hunt Groups, hunt lines on same unit first feature. This feature
ensures that the TalkSwitch system will first use available lines on the
unit where the extension is connected, to minimize network traffic
between units. This feature is set automatically, but can be disabled if
necessary.
Ensure that the line hunt groups are configured before using ARS. For
more information, see 2.2.4 Line hunt groups on page 44.
