Fuel Tank Cap and Strainer - Clean

Fuel system water separator (1) for the tractor and for
the scraper is mounted below the primary fuel filter.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Fuel
System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element -
Replace” for the location of the primary fuel filter.
1. Open drain (2) on water separator bowl (1).
2. Drain the water from the water separator bowl.
3. Close the drain.
4. Repeat Step 1 through Step 3 for the scraper.

The fuel tank cap is located on the top of the fuel tank.
The f
uel tank cap has a filter element that is located
within the cap. The filter element filters the air that
enters the fuel tank as the fuel level changes.
The strainer is located under the fuel tank cap. The
strainer will strain the fuel as the fuel enters the fuel
ta
nk.
1. Clean the area around the fuel tank cap.
2. Remove the fuel tank cap.
3. Re
move the gasket that is part of the fuel tank
cap. Inspect the gasket for damage. If the gasket
is damaged, replace the gasket.
4. Disassemble th
e fuel tank cap. Remove the filter
elements. Clean the filter elements in clean,
nonflammable solvent.
5. Apply a thin coat of oil to the filter elements.
Assemble the fuel tank cap.
6. Install the gasket.
7. Remove the s
trainer. Clean the strainer in clean,
nonflammable solvent.
8. Install the
strainer.
9. Clean the fuel tank cap. Install the fuel tank cap.

during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the fluid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.
