Fuel System Water Separator - Drain
Procedure for the Scraper

Fuel shutoff valve (4) for the scraper is located on the
left side of the engine above the primary fuel filter.

ndary fuel filter (5) for the scraper is mounted on
the left side of the scraper engine.
1. Par
k the machine on a level surface.
2. Lower the bowl.
3. Shut off the engine.
4. Mo
ve fuel shutoff valve (4) to the CLOSED
position.
5. Cl
ean secondary fuel filter (5). Clean filter
mounting base (6), which is located below the
filter.
6. Turn the filter to the left in order to loosen the filter.
Loosen the fi lter with a strap type wrench.
7. Remove the filter. Clean the bottom of the filter
mounting base. Make sure that all of the old filter
s
eal is removed.
8. Apply clean diesel fuel to the seal of the new
secondary filter.
9. Install the new
fuel filter hand tight until the seal
of the fuel filter contacts the filter mounting base.
Note the position of the index marks on the filter in
relation to a fi
xed point on the filter mounting base.
Note: There are rotation index marks on the filter
that are spac
ed 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away
from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the
rotation index marks as a guide.
10. Tighten the filter according to the instructions that
are printed on the filter. Use the index marks as a
guide for ti
ghtening the filter.
Note: You may need to use a Caterpillar strap
wrench, or
another suitable tool, in order to turn
the filter to the amount that is required for final
installation. Make sure that the installation tool does
not damage
the fi
lter.
11. Return the fuel shutoff valve to the OPEN position.
12. Purge the air from the fuel system. See the
Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System
-Prime”f
or further instructions.
Note: The primary fuel filter should also be
changed
at this time. See the Operation and
Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System Primary Filter
(Water Separator) Element - Replace” for further
instruc
tions.
13. Start the engine and check for leaks.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the fluid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.
