NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the fluid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Tools and Shop Products Guide” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.
Procedure for the Tractor

The secondary f
uel filter for the tractor is mounted on
the front of the hydraulic tank. The secondary fuel
filter is on the right side of the engine compartment
above the prim
ary fuel filter.
1. Park the machine on a level surface.
2. Lower the bowl.
3. Shut off the
engine.
4. Move fuel shutoff valve (3) to the CLOSED
position.
5. Clean secondary fuel filter (2). Clean filter
mounting b
ase (1), which is located above the
filter.
6. Turn the fil
ter to the left in order to loosen the filter.
Loosen the filter with a strap type wrench.
7. Remove th
e filter. Clean the bottom of the filter
mounting base. Make sure that all of the old filter
seal is removed.
8. Apply clean diesel fuel to the seal of the new
secondary filter.
9. Install the new fuel filter hand tight until the seal
of the fuel filter contacts the filter mounting base.
Note the
position of the index marks on the filter in
relation to a fixed point on the filter mounting base.
Note: T
here are rotation index marks on the filter
that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away
from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the
rotat
ion index marks as a guide.
10. Tighten the filter according to the instructions that
are pr
intedonthefilter. Use the index marks as a
guide for tightening the filter.
Note
: You may need to use a Caterpillar strap
wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn
the filter to the amount that is required for
final
inst
allation. Make sure that the installation tool does
not damage the filter.
11. Ret
urn the fuel shutoff valve to the OPEN position.
12. Purge the air from the fuel system. See the
Ope
ration and Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System
- Prime” for further instructions.

te: The fuel system water separator also needs
to be changed at this time. See Operation and
Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System Primary Filter
(W
ater Separator) Element - Replace”.
13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
