Engine Valve Lash - Check
Note: Drain the
crankcase while the oil is warm. This
allows waste particles that are suspended in the oil to
drain. As the oil cools, the waste particles will settle
to the bottom o
f the crankcase. The particles w ill not
be removed by draining the oil and the particles will
recirculate in the engine lubrication system with the
new oil.
1. Park the machine on a level surface and engage
the parking
brake. Stop the engine.
2. Remove crankcase drain plug (1).
3. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
4. Install th
e drain plug.
5. Remove engine oil lter (4) with a strap type
wrench. Se
e Operation and Maintenance Manual,
“Oil Filter - Inspect”. Discard the used oil lter
properly.
6. Clean the lter mounting base with a clean towel.
Make sure that all of the old lter seal has been
removed.
7. Apply a thin lm of clean engine oil to the seal of
the new e
ngine oil lter.
8. Install the new engine oil lter hand tight until
the seal
of the engine oil lter contacts the lter
mounting base. Note the position of the index
marks on the lter in relation to a xed point on
the lt
er mounting base.
Note: There are rotation index marks on the engine
oil l
ter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn
away from each other. When you tighten the engine
oil lter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
9. Tighten the oil lter according to the instructions
that are printed on the lter. Use the index marks
as a g
uide for tightening the oil lter.
Note: You may need to use a Caterpillar strap
wren
ch, or another suitable tool, in order to turn
the lter to the amount that is required for nal
installation. Make sure that the installation tool does
not
damage the lter.
10. Clean the area around oil ller cap (2). Remove
the
padlock from the oil
ller cap (if equipped).
Remove the oil ller cap. Fill the crankcase with
new oil. See the following topics:
Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Lubricant
Viscosities”
Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Capacities
(Rell)”
Operation and M
aintenance Manual, Engine
Oil Level - Check”
11. Clean the oil
ller cap and install the oil ller cap.
12. Start the engine and allow the oil to warm. Check
theenginefo
rleaks.Checkthelter for leaks.
13. Remove the padlock from the oil gauge (if
equipped).
Run the engine and check oil gauge (3)
after the engine has been running for ten minutes.
Maintain the oil between the marks on the “LOW
IDLE” side o
f the oil gauge. If necessary, add oil.
14. Install both padlocks (if equipped). Stop the
engine.

Engine Valve La sh - Check
SMCS Code: 1105-535
Ensure that the engine can not be started while
this maintenance is being performed. To help pre-
vent pos sible injury, do not use the starting motor
to turn the ywheel.
Hot engine compone nts can cause burns. Allow
additional time for the engine to cool before mea-
suring/adjusting valve lash clearance.
NOTICE
Only q
ualied service personnel should perform this
maintenance. Refer to the Service Manual or your
Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve lash adjust-
ment
procedure.
Operation of Caterpillar engines with improper valve
adju
stments can reduce engine efciency. This re-
duced efciency could result in excessive fuel usage
and/or shortened engine component life.
The initial valve lash adjustment is recommended
at the rst scheduled oil change. The valve lash
ad
justment should then be made at every 2000 hour
interval. The adjustment is necessary due to the
initial wear of the valve train components and to the
se
ating of the valve train components.
This maintenance is recommended by Caterpillar
a
s part of a lubrication and preventive maintenance
schedule in order to help provide maximum engine
life.
