Engine Oil and Filter - Change
Hot oil and hot c omponents can cause personal
injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to
contact skin.
Note: API CH-4, API CI-4, and API CI-4 PLUS oils
are acceptable in the C15 Acert Diesel Engine if
the requirements of Caterpillar's ECF-1 (Engine

Oil filter (3) for the tractor is on the right side of the
engine.
Note: Drain the crankcase while the oil is warm. This
allows waste particles that are suspended in the oil to
drain. As the oil cools, the waste particles will settle
to the bottom of the crankcase. The particles w ill not
be removed by draining the oil and the particles will
recirculate in the engine lubrication system with the
new oil.
1. Park the machine on a level surface and engage
the parking brake. Stop the engine.
2. Remove crankca
se drain valve access cover (1)
from guard (2).
3. Useawrenchto
open the crankcase drain valve.
4. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
5. Close the crankcase drain valve. Install the
crankcase drain valve access cover.
6. Open the access door on the right side of the
engine.
7. Remove engine oil filter (3) with a strap type
wrench. See Operation and Maintenance Manual,
“Oil Filte
r - Inspect”. Discard the used oil filter
properly.
8. Clean the fi
lter mounting base with a clean towel.
Make sure that all of the old filter seal has been
removed.
9. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the seal of
the new engine oil filter.
10. Install the new engine oil filter hand tight until
the seal of the engine oil filter contacts the fi lter
mountin
g base. Note the position of the index
marks on the filter in relation to a fixed p oint on
the filter mounting base.
Note: There are rotation index marks on the engine
oil filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn
away fr
om each other. When you tighten the engine
oil filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
11. Tight
en the oil filter according to the instructions
that are printed on the filter. Use the index marks
as a guide for tightening the oil filter.
Note: You may need to use a Caterpillar strap
wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn
the fi
lter to the amount that is required for final
installation. Make sure that the installation tool does
not damage the fi
lter.
