Cooling System Coolant Extender (ELC) - Add
9. Check the coola
nt level. The radiator is full when
the sight gauge is completely covered. Also, the
radiator is full when the coolant level reaches the
top of the angl
ed cut on the ller tube. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Cooling
System Coolant Level - Check”.
10. Inspect the gasket of the cooling system pressure
cap. If the gasket is damaged, replace the gasket.
11. Clean the cooling system pressure cap. Install the
cooling system pressure cap.
12. Stop the engine.

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam
and alkali.
At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot
and under pressure. The radiator and all lines
to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or
steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.
Remove ller cap slowly to relieve pressure only
when engine is s topped a nd radiator cap is cool
enough to touch with your bare hand.
Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when
the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing
burns.
Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid
contact with skin and eyes.
When Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant (ELC)
is used, an extender must be added to the
cooling system. See Operation and Maintenance
Manual, Maintenance Interval Schedule” for the
proper service interval. The amount of extender is
determined by the cooling system capacity.

use the formula in Table 12 in order to determine the
correctamountofextender.

(1)
×0.02=X
(2)
(1)
V is the total v olume of the cooling system.
(2)
X is the amount of ELC Extender that is required.
For additional information about adding an extender,
see Special Publication, SEBU6250, “Caterpillar
Machine Fluids Recommendations”, “Extended Life
