Chapter 8 Information Backup and Exchange In addition to synchronizing data, you can use Windows CE Services to back up and restore Palm PC data, to copy and move files between your Palm PC and your desktop computer, and to install and remove software on your Palm PC, Back Up and Restore Data Regularly back up your Palm PC data on your desktop computer, using Windows CE Services. If information is ever corrupted or lost on your Pam PC, you can restore your data using the backup file.
e e Enable automatic backups When you restore your Palm PC data, you replace all existing data with the data from the last backup, If you have files on your Palm PC that you want to save, first drag them from the Explorer window in Windows CE Services to your desktop computer, as described in the next section. After restoring your data, disconnect the two computers and reset your Pam PC. Tip In a corporate setting, you might want to use the backup file from one Palm PC to initialize a group of Palm PCs.
72 Pam PC Users Guide Install and Remove Software You can install any program created for your Palm PC, as long as your Palm PC has enough memory of storage space. You'll need to install the software on your desktop computer before moving it to the Palm PC. First install the software on your desktop computer and then connect your Palm PC to your desktop computer. Some software programs provide their own setup instructions.
Both devices will play a sound to indicate the beginning and completion of the transfer. Note If your computer supports IR communications and runs Windows 95, you can also use the IR port on your Palm PC to connect directly to your desktop computer, instead of using a serial cable. Synchronize messages E-mail messages can be synchronized as part of the general synchronization process described in Chapter 5. This chapter describes connections between your Palm PC and three basic types of remote computers: a service provider, your corporate network (typically through a RAS connection), and your desktop computer or another personal computer.
