to various 'sub-trees' and eventually to 'leaves' which are individual
commands. Selection of the route through this tree from the current
menu is by entering selection characters as defined in each menu along
the way. These selection characters may be entered singly resulting in
prompts at each menu level, or as a complete string. Most commands will
also require parameters, some will require multiple lines of parameters
which can either be appended to the selection characters or in following
input lines in which case the unit will prompt for them as required.
2.1.1 Modes of Operation
The 3200 local control system can operate in four modes, 'Brief' or
'Verbose' and 'Echo' or 'No Echo'. On initial power up the operating mode
will default to the 'Verbose' + 'Echo' mode. which can be changed by menu
commands if required. Verbose mode
MUST be used with the NCS.
Brief/Verbose
In verbose mode the local control port will provide full prompts for menu
selection and parameter entry, the output from commands which display
information will also contain some explanatory text. In brief mode, all
menu and parameter prompt texts are suppressed and output information
will have any explanatory text suppressed. Brief mode is provided for
factory test purposes, or fast access by experienced users using pre-
prepared configuration scripts controlling a communication package
running on a Personal Computer for example.
Echo/Noecho
If echo is enabled, all normal characters received will be echoed. Lower
case characters entered will be echoed in upper case.
2.1.2 Commands and Control Characters
Prompt Characters
The 3200 will always prompt when it requires another input line, in
verbose mode this will consist of text indicating possible selections of
parameters required followed by a special prompt character. In brief
mode, only the prompt character will be displayed. There are three
possible prompt characters as shown below:
