TROUBLESHOOTING
Problem Cause Correction
No ignition spark
Spark plugs 1. Spark plug electrode is wet Dry spark plug
2. Carbon deposits on the electrodes Scrape off
3. Insulation defect through damage Change
4. Incorrect electrode gap Set to 0.6-0.7 mm
5. Burnt electrode Replace spark plug
Ignition coil 1. Defective ignition coil Change
2. Cable sheath damaged, cable loose Change
Ignition spark present
Compression and fuel feed is normal 1. Too much fuel drawn in Remove excess fuel
2. Mixture too rich Adjust carburettor
3. Engine flooded Adjust or change carburettor
4. Air filter clogged Wash out with a fuel-oil mix
5. Wrong fuel mixture Change for appropriate fuel
Normal fuel feed but too little compres

sion
1. Worn cylinder, piston or piston ring Change
2. Mixture escaping from cylinder and crank
shaft sealing ring
Apply liquid sealant and reassemble
No fuel feed 1. Air gap in choke intake Clean
2. Blocked carburettor Clean
3. Blocked fuel filter Change fuel filter
Ignition spark present
Compression normal, no misfires 1. Air is getting into the fuel line at joints Make joints tighter
2. Air is getting into the intake or carburettor
joint
Change gasket / tighten screws
3. Water in fuel Change for appropriate fuel
4. Piston starting to seize Change piston (and cylinder if need be)
5. Exhaust clogged with soot Clean
Overheating 1. Mixture too lean Adjust carburettor
2. Cylinder cooling fins dusty Clean
3. Inferior fuel quality Change for appropriate fuel
4. Carbonisation in combustion chamber Clean
5. Spark plug electrode glowing red Clean, adjust electrode gap (0.6-0.7 mm)
Other 1. Clogged oil filter Wash out with a fuel-oil mix
2. Load too heavy Reduce load
The engine fails to start
Lack of power or not running smoothly
