Installation Guide

IMPORTANT: To keep treads in place while the glue
dries, use 3-4 brad/stay nails on the back 3/8” of
the tread to prevent slippage. Make sure the next
riser will cover any of the mechanical fasteners used.

Set in place
6. Use heavy duty all urethane construction
adhesive. Apply a thick 1/4” line around
the perimeter and in a zig-zag pattern
through the back center of the Cap
A Tread. Adhere the new tread to the
existing tread. No need to use a trowel or
spread the adhesive completely.

Check fit
5. Check the cut of the Cap A Tread for
accuracy by dry-fitting it onto the stair for
which you measured.
Measure
4. To ensure a proper tight fit, use a tread tool or an angle gauge on
each end to make a template of the tread itself. Be sure to take multi-
ple measurements to accommodate for any irregularities in the step.
NOTE: The Cap A Tread system should be installed beginning with the
bottom- most riser and alternating the treads and risers from bottom to top.

Risers
7. Measure and cut risers only after the
previous tread has been installed. Cut
down the width of risers with a sliding
compound miter saw. Use a table saw
(or circular saw with a guide)
to make any alterations to the height
of the riser that runs along the entire length of the product.
8. As in step #6, use heavy duty all urethane construction adhesive
and apply a thick 1/4” line around the perimeter and through the
center in a zig-zag pattern on the back of the riser. Adhere the
new riser to the existing riser.
Finishing
9. Caulk Cap A Tread around the
perimeter of the stair treads/risers and
wipe clean for a nice finished look.
Prepare
1. Gather all tools listed above.
2. Start by removing any existing
carpet, pad, tack strips and
staples from your
existing staircase.
3. Vacuum the staircase and make
sure it’s free of debris.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the specs for landings and top stair?
The Cap A Tread can be used by cutting off the front portion as
close to the same width as the plank flooring but no less than 4
and transitioning to the rest of the flooring with a T molding or
multipurpose reducer.
There can be multiple options for finishing the top step and land-
ings shorter than 47”. When using a stair nose at either of these
locations, be sure to use coordinating products.
NOTE: For situations where the width of the nosing exceeds 47” or you do not
have a natural breakpoint – stair nose is the logical choice.
Do I remove existing spindles?
If spindles are present on the staircase, they must first be removed
to allow for proper installation of the tread(s). Never cut around
spindles or any other obstruction.
NOTE:
Consult a professional contractor prior to Cap A Tread install
or removal of spindles, to ensure proper installation.
Landings that turn a corner?
If the nosing projects out too far for the
underside of the tread to cover, use a
piece from the length of a tread already
ripped off and glue it underneath so no
space is exposed.
