Enhanced 6.3-Megapixel CMOS Sensor
The camera uses
a highly advanced
CMOS (Complementary
MetalOxide Semi-
conductor) Sensor
to convert light into
electrical signals.
The large sensor has
a 3:2 aspect ratio, traditional to 35mm film,
for a compositional feel that will be instantly
familiar. Peripheral circuitry improvements
and a refined manufacturing process new to
the EOS 10D make the sensor extremely precise.
This new level of precision optimizes the
camera’s impressive 6.3-megapixel resolution
to deliver quality that goes beyond mere pixel
count. Images are luminescent, life-like, and
incredibly rich in detail. In short, the EOS 10D
confidently rivals film quality, while offering
all the advantages of digital technology.
All New Imaging Engine
The EOS 10D incorporates Canon’s most
advanced imaging technology: the DIGIC
Imaging Engine. This ultra-capable new
processor, even being fine-tuned to meet digital
EOSimage quality, creates images that are
uncommonlywell-defined, with color repro-
duction that is completely natural. Images
come to life with superb gradation of highlight
areas, a wide tonal range and detailed shadow
areas. The processor renders signal noise (stray
light or off-color pixels) minimal to nonexistent,
for an extraordinary leap in technology
that frees you to enlarge, crop and
retouch with exceptional results.
In addition to enhancing
image quality,
the DIGICImaging Engine’s faster processing
capability speeds overall operation and
heightens the accuracy of the camera’s auto-
focus and other systems. Because the camera
is quick, responsive and agile, your shooting
experience is natural, intuitive and a pleasure.
And when the great shots are
ready, you are too.
Expanded Color Space
The camera has many features that make it
ideal for knowledgeable photographers who
want the opportunity to take their talent even
further. One of these features is the ability to
switch between standard sRGB color space
and Adobe RGB color space. Adobe RGB color
space is a broader-than-standard color spectrum
with relatively
low saturation.
Use it when you
plan to make fine
adjustments to
color saturation
in your finished
images.
7-point AF System with Selectable
Superimposed Focusing Points
7-point AF lets you place your subject virtually
anywhere in the frame, knowing that focus will
be where you want it and absolutely accurate.
The camera’s AF sensor features 7 selectable
focusing points configured in a wide cross-
pattern across the imaging area. Because the
focusing points reach so much of the screen,
off-center coverage is superb. And because
the
focusing points are superimposed in the
viewfinder
and illuminated upon selection,
you’ll always know where the focus falls. Even
if you’re shooting in full automatic mode, no
matter if the camera is oriented vertically or
horizontally, you’ll achieve precise focus
without recomposing your shot.
At Canon, we know that the great shots don’t
wait around for AF systems to kick in. The EOS
10D’s AF speed and subject tracking are as
fast or faster than Canon’s EOS Elan series
SLRs’. When the perfect
shot arrives,
you’ll be
ready for it.
The camera’s 3 distinct AF modes ensure
the right AF for every situation:
One-Shot AF
Sharp, instant focus is locked in when the
shutter is depressed halfway, allowing you to
recompose the shot without losing focus.
Predictive AI Servo AF
The EOS 10D tracks the subject’s movement,
continually adjusting the lens drive and shut-
ter release to predict, and achieve, amazingly
precise focus. Perfect for sports, children,
pets…any subject on the move.
AI Focus AF
You concentrate on getting the best shot while
the camera decides which AF system to use.
AI Focus AF allows the camera to switch
automatically between One-Shot AF and AI
Servo AF as the subject moves and stops.
35-zone, AF Point-linked Evaluative Sensor
and Triple Metering System
The camera’s new evaluative sensor takes
the guesswork out of exposure, an area that
poses challenges for all photographers. The
sensor takes metering information from 35
zones, evaluates the data and weighs it
intelligently based on several factors. The
result? Complex scenesare properly exposed,
and multiple images of the same scene are
consistent.
3 metering modes offer excellent flexibility:
35-zone Evaluative Metering
Professional results the easy way:
because the system is linked to the AF
point in use, metering emphasis falls
on the subject. Exposure compensa-
tion is automatically activated when
appropriate.
Partial Metering
This system offers careful metering of
difficult lighting situations and close-ups
by measuring 9% of the picture’s cen-
ter. The area measured is demarcated
with a circle in the viewfinder.
Center-weighted Average Metering
A favorite of experienced photographers:
metering is calculated over the entire
image, yet emphasis is placed on the
center subject.
Versatile Shooting Modes
Pre-programmed shooting modes optimize the
camera’s settings to best handle a variety of
common shooting situations, including Portrait,
Landscape, Close-up, Sports, and Night Portrait.
There are also numerousother shooting
modes, designed to give you exceptional lati-
tude in creating the images you envision:
Intelligent Program AE for fully automatic
shooting, Program AE to let you experiment
with shutter and aperture combinations, Shutter
Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE, Depth of Field
AE that lets you create a “zone of sharpness,”
Full Manual, Auto Exposure Bracketing (records
3 exposures in a customable range of up to
+/-2 stops in 1/2- or 1/3-step increments),
AE Lock and Flash Off Mode (which will also
disable any external Speedlite in use).
D
Auto Depth-of-field AE: The camera creates
a custom “zone of sharpness” by setting the focus
and aperture necessary to create sufficient depth of
field to cover the distance between the nearest and
furthest subjects covered by the 7 focusing points.
M
Manual Exposure: This mode lets you
take full creative control. Create any shutter
speed/aperture combination, and turn built-in
metering systems on or off.
V
Aperture-priority: Dramatic creative
effects are easy, as the camera sets the shutter
speed to your aperture selection.
T
Shutter-priority: You can freeze high-speed
action by setting shutter speed to as fast as
1/4000 second while the camera chooses an
appropriate aperture.
P
Program AE:
This mode allows you
to play with alternate
shutter and aperture combinations while the
camera maintains a constant exposure value.
U
Full Auto: This fully automatic mode lets
you concentrate on other factors while the
camera uses readings of the focal length,
maximum lens aperture, film speed and avail-
able light to set the optimal combination of
shutter speed and aperture value.
p
Portrait: A large aperture focuses the
foreground subject while creating a beautifully
blurred background.
l
Landscape: Sweeping scenery shots
made easy: the camera selects smaller aper-
tures, producing greater depth-of-field and
sharply focused backgrounds.
c
Close-up: A moderate aperture and partial
metering create subjects that stand out against
the background at close distances.
s
Sports: AI Servo AF and fast shutter
speeds freeze fast action for memorable shots.
N
Night Portrait: The aperture is set accord-
ing to the brightness of the scene, creating
well-illuminated foregrounds and back-
grounds in this challenging situation.
Flash off:
This option allows you to disable
the built-in flash in addition to any external
Speedlite in use.
