98 IV PATIENT OUTREACH
The EyePACS Handbook: Tools for Program Success
Friends & Family Outreach
Many clinic patients may have diabetic friends or family members who might not know
that they need yearly diabetic retinopathy screenings. Word of mouth is an effective
way to try to reach these individuals and bring them in to get screened. Posters and
informative emails and text messages can be used to educate patients about the risks
of diabetic retinopathy and the screening services that the clinic provides.
Friends & Family Email
Email Subject: If you have a loved one with diabetes, this email could save their sight
Email Body Copy:
Nearly half of diabetics in the United States have retinopathy, an eye condition that can
lead to blindness. Retinopathy often has no symptoms, but it can be accurately
diagnosed with a simple, inexpensive, and painless examination.
Our clinic provides on-site retinopathy screening for diabetics for only $15. The
examination involves having a picture taken of the eye and getting the image analyzed
for interpretation. It is completely painless and usually takes under 10 minutes to
complete.
If you know someone with diabetes, let them know about retinopathy screening. It
could save their sight!

Text Message Campaign
SMS text messages are a relatively new vehicle for conducting patient outreach. They
can be a very effective way to:
Quickly get the word out to patients that a clinic offers diabetic retinopathy
screening services;
Reach transient populations who rely heavily on mobile phones; and
Inform diabetic patients when it’s time for their yearly screening.
