Excellent Text Scanning
Text Scanning ensures maximum text
recognition, even when documents have
colored backgrounds, have diagrams
behind the text, or are printed on thin
paper which ’show through’. This is fur-
ther enhanced by Automatic Area
Segmentation, which separates text and
photographic elements of a document,
processing each at optimum settings to
ensure the sharpest text while maintaining
subtle gradations in images.
Dynamic Range Control
Dynamic Range Control is particularly
effective in transparency scans, but also
ensures the best printed or negative film
scanning by taking into account different
dynamic ranges. The result is improved
overall quality with particular improvement
in shadow detail in dark-colored areas.
Color Quality
The Expression 1680 and 1640XL achieve
up to 48-and 42-bit processing (280 and 4
trillion colors, 65,000 and 16,000 shades of
gray) respectively. This combines with
color matching for industry standards
including Windows ICM, sRGB and
ColorSync to provide scans which retains
all the color depth and accuracy of the
original. Simultaneous RGB scanning also
ensures superior color fidelity by continu-
ously capturing and processing RGB data
as the scan head advances.

Matrix CCD Technology with
On-Demand Pixel Optimiser
Cutting edge alternate Matrix CCD
technology utilizes a staggered array of
sensors to collect information which is
then merged into a single line to effec-
tively double the scanning resolution.
This is carried out by the high perform-
ance image processing ASIC (Application
Specific Integrated Circuit) which also
assures virtually instantaneous image
display and reduces the load on your
computer, allowing it to perform other
tasks while data-intensive high-resolu-
tion scanning is in progress.
At low resolutions, the On Demand Pixel
Optimiser allows ultra high speed scan-
ning by only utilizing one line of pixels,
which reduces the time taken to read
the color information as the head moves
down the scanning bed.

◆ 1600 x 3200 dpi hardware resolution deliv-
ers extraordinary image quality. 42-bit
color depth produces smooth gradations,
captures over 4 trillion colors and 16,000
shades of gray. High dynamic range
(3.6Dmax) ensures accurate scans with
subtle details in the shadow areas.

ual mode for precise sharpness control,

images, pick your point of focus so that
background items are captured with sharp
detail. When scanning transparencies or
slides mounted in holders, focus can be
set to compensate for the 2.5mm distance
between the glass and the slide.

transparency adapter, you can scan trans-
