1600 dpi 48-bit Flatbed Scanners
The highest resolution, fastest graphics scanner in their class, the Expression
1680 series scanners utilize Epson's Matrix CCD and Micro Step Drive
technologies to achieve true 1600 x 3200 dpi hardware resolution. This
precision coupled with 48-bit color, 3.6 Dmax dynamic range and blazing fast
scanning speeds makes them an excellent tool for graphics arts, photography
and pre-press professionals. And all except the Special Edition model include
LaserSoft’s SilverFast Ai 5 scanning software. Available in four cross-platform
software configurations (Special Edition, Artist, Professional and Firewire Pro)
they are well suited for a variety of applications.

High Performance
◆ Unique Dual Position Focus provides pin-
point focusing for both reflective and
transparent media. When using the scan-
ner’s custom film holders to scan transpar-
ent media, you can set the scanner’s focal
distance to compensate for the 2.5mm dis-
tance between the glass and the media.
This eliminates the “Newton Rings” that
plague other scanners. (Newton Rings are
the circular rainbow-colored patterns that
appear in a scanned image —similar to the
rainbows that appear in soap bubbles.
◆ They can produce scans at incredibly fast
speeds. Create a full color preview in 10
seconds, scan an 8.5 x 11˝ color photo in
under 23 seconds when scanning at 300
dpi and scan a 35 mm slide at 1600 dpi in
under 65 seconds.
◆ High intensity Xenon cold cathode fluores-
cent lamp provides unsurpassed reliability
and longevity. It has a short warm-up time,
so you can start scanning right away. The
lamp also produces more natural-looking
colors because it closely resembles natu-
ral sunlight. When the scanner isn't in use,
the lamp turns off, to significantly reduce
energy consumption.
◆ They are equipped with a USB interface
(up to 1.5 MB/s) for maximum ease of use,
and a SCSI-2 interface (up to 10 MB/s) for
maximum performance. An optional
Firewire (IEEE1394) card is also available
for up to 50 MB per second throughput.

Epson TWAIN Pro Software
◆ Epson’s TWIN Pro scanning software (bun-
dled with all models) provides basic set-
tings, resolution and scaling, image con-
trol, tone correction, color adjustment,
exposure setting and color management.
The software also supports batch scan-
ning and networking. With batch scanning,
you can define customized settings for
each framed original, then capture each
one as a separate file—with one scan.
Expression 1680
Special Edition
Ideal for software developers and system
integrators, the 1680 Special Edition ships
with Epson's TWAIN Pro Scanner Utilities
(TWAIN Pro, TWAIN Pro for Networks and
the PC-based Scan Server software) which
allows Mac and PC clients on a network to
access the scanner through a PC.
