SCANMAKER 8700/SCANMAKER 8700 PRO DESIGN
2400-dpi Dual Media Firewire Scanners
A Firewire (IEEE1394) enabled scanner, the ScanMaker 8700 deliver fast
2400 x 1200 dpi scans with 42-bit color. Scan a 4 x 6" at 300 dpi in 5 sec-
onds. Patented, dual-media design supports scanning film transparencies
up to 8 x 10˝—via an internal sliding drawer that offers glassless scan-
ning—as well as standard reflective items up to 8.5 x 14˝. It allows you to
scan documents directly into Microsoft Word for easy text editing or to cre-
ate PDF files for sharing in just one step. It includes a host of software
including Microtek’s ScanWizard 5, Photoshop Elements, Genuine Fractals 2.5 and a set of film holder for batch
scanning film. The ScanMaker 8700 Pro Design is the same scanner but comes with top-of-the-line software for
imaging professionals. Includes award-winning ScanWizard Pro 6 TX, Genuine Fractals Print Pro, LaserSoft’s
SilverFast Ai 5.5 and two Kodak Q-60 calibration targets.
True single pass 1200 dpi resolution cap-
tures images with 1.44 million pixels per
square inch to ensure razor sharp detail.
42-bit input and output
42-bits of crisp detailed color information
allows you to get the most out of your
scans. Captures trillions of colors for the
most accurate highlights and shadows.
Legal-size scanning lets you scan over-
sized materials up to 8.5 x 14", such as
mortgages, oversized publications, art-
work, and newspaper articles.
Zero Reflection technology eliminates
reflection artifacts and dramatically
improves scanned images by absorbing
external ambient light for more accurate
color. Flex-Scan lid accommodates books
and other objects for 3D scanning.
Equipped with Firewire (IEEE1394) inter-
face for ultra high speed transfer rates,
and USB for hot swappable convenience.
PC versions include a PCI Firewire card.
Scan directly to PDFs to archive important
documents or post them on the web. Take
advantage of the latest advancements in
graphics & prepress workflow.
Easy, intelligent and powerful OCR con-
verts documents with multiple columns,
charts and color graphics with incredible
accuracy. Open documents directly into
Word, Excel and even Adobe Acrobat.
Never retype information again.
Supplied SnapTrans templates (film hold-
ers) allows you to batch scan up to 16
35mm slides or 24 negatives, as well as
medium-format 120mm film.

Dual Media Design with E.D.I.T. (Emulsion Direct Imaging Technology)
A TMA (Transparent Media Adapter) while adequate for general imaging, is not sufficient
for professional applications that require accurate color tones, full dynamic range and
sharp detail in scanning. This is because there is a loss of illumination when light passes
through the glass, while the glass itself causes refraction and multi-reflection. The combi-
nation of these two factors leads to the formation of Newton Rings. Also when using a
TMA, film placed on the scanner bed cannot be kept perfectly flat, resulting in curvature.
Microtek’s E.D.I.T. like in drum scanning enables the scanner CCD lens to read directly
from the emulsion side of the film, with no glass coming between the lens and the
scanned target. E.D.I.T. technology consists of two light sources (one for reflective materi-
al and one dedicated to transparent media), switching flip mirrors and removable film
holders. By using the various film holders or the glass tray, transparent media of different
sizes can be positioned— laid flat, stretched out, inserted into the drawer, and then
scanned in their full dynamic range, and without any Newton Rings.
