High Performance
◆ Scene analysis function, featuring
intelligent tone and color auto-
correction, enables fine reproduction of
orange-tinged negative film.
◆ Scanning is accelerated by the incorpora-
tion of an ASIC (Application Specific
Integrated Circuit). With a full-resolution
2900 dpi scan, it takes only 42 seconds
for the image to appear on the monitor.

Color Management System
◆ Compatible with other ICC standard
profiles like ColorSync and ICM, Nikon’s
Color Management System sets up a
system that not only provides vivid,
extremely accurate color, but ensures
color matching (the same color is
scanned and printed as it appears on the
monitor). It also allows you to scan and
deliver the image directly into Photoshop
in any of ten color spaces including
CMYK, sRGB, Lch and RGB.
LED Technology
The Coolscan name is used for the “cooling”
LED technology it incorporates. This means
that the scanner will not get hot, so there’s no
possibility of damage to the original film.
Additional benefits of the LED are:
◆ The LED light source delivers more
consistent and accurate color than cold
cathode or Xenon light sources. And the
LEDs never need to be calibrated,
making the first scan as good as the last.
The color is consistent and reliable,
staying the same at any time during the
day or during the life of the scanner.
◆ The LED light source is brighter and will
burn cooler than other light sources,
resulting in less noise in your scans.
◆ LED illumination is also considerably gen-
tler on film, so you don’t have to be
afraid of damaging film during the scan-
ning process either. LED illumination also
requires minimal maintenance resulting
in hassle-free extended usage. Because no
cooling fans are required, there are no
bulbs to burn out or replace.
◆ Get right to work after turning the the
power on— there’s no need to wait for the
scanner to warm up.
◆ Quick Preview function provides image
preview and image exposure correction
capabilities.
◆ Quick AF (with Slide Mount Adapter MA-
20S only) is automatically initiated once
the appropriate film format for scanning

Via Nikon Scan 3 software, the Coolscan IV ED offers
“out of the box” plug and play simplicity making it as
easy to set-up, as it is to use. Acting as an interface
between the scanner and the computer, Nikon Scan 3
makes it possible to preview the image to be
scanned, adjust scanner settings, and scan the image.
• Completely redesigned Photoshop plug-in for
Macintosh and TWAIN source for Windows, allows
the Nikon Scan 3 driver to run with any
Photoshop or TWAIN-compatible image-editing software, as well as standalone.
• From simple simple scanning to advanced editing, even a beginner can use Nikon
Scan 3 thanks to the easy-to-understand GUI (graphical user interface). The image
display can be resized and drag-and-drop can be performed. Preview, rotation,
enlargement/reduction, reversal, display, trimming, resolution setting, and various
adjustments can also be done.
• Nikon Scan 3 is best suited for scanning six-frame strip films and Advanced Photo
System (APS) films. It can display thumbnails at high speed, enabling the selection of
any frame or continuous scanning of all frames. You can select and display any frame
by entering frame numbers. Batch scanning is also available for any number of frames.
