C. FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement)
1. Outline
When scanning a film, it is difficult to obtain a clean image because of dirt and scrach on the
film. CanoScan 9900F is equipped with the IR LED in addition to the FAU lamp (cold cathode
fluorescent lamp) to remove scratches and dirt on a film by scanning a film by two light
sources. This function is called FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement).
The IR LED scans only scratches and dirt on a film as image data. This data is compared to
the full image data scanned by the FAU lamp, and the overlap data (that is of scratches and
dirt) is deleted. The other scanned data of the film compensates for the deleted area, and the
image without scratches and dirt is reproduced.
