Installation, Operation and Maintainance of Buoy Operated Automatic Meteorological Stations
Sensors
3.3.3 Use
The operation of the HMP45C is fully automatic and no user action is required. The appropriate operating instructions
are included in the BUOY_METSTAT datalogger program.
3.3.4 Maintenance
The HMP45C requires minimal maintenance, as follows:
During each visit to the Met Station, check if the radiation shield is free from dust and debris;•
Each two years, replace the humidity chip (contact Campbell Scientific). •
3.3.5 Trouble Shooting
Problem 1: Temperature and or Relative Humidity values are zero.
Remedy 1.1: Check if all HMP45C wires are properly connected to the CR10X wiring panel. The reader is referred
to table 1 in paragraph 2.2, and Annex 2, for the correct wiring of the HMP45C to the CR10X.
Remedy 1.2: Re-load BUOY_METSTAT following the instructions given in paragraph 2.5.
3.4 Model 108 Temperature Probe
3.4.1 General
The 108 Temperature Probe electronically measures air, soil or water temperature. It uses a thermistor for measur-
ing temperature. This sensor is intended to be used in duplicate each submerged at the water surface for measuring
temperature at the water surface and at 20 meters inside the water body. It is designed to be submerged at water
depths for upto 50 feet. The operating temperature is between –40C to +95C. The probe is programmed to take
measurements at a 5-minutes interval. The datalogger places all daily recordings in a temporary memory, and this
information is then used to determine (a) hourly average temperature, (b) daily average temperature, and (c) daily
maximum and minimum temperatures. Only these values are stored in the logger’s Final Storage Area, and the
temporary memory is erased at the end of a recording day. To conserve energy, the datalogger is programmed to
deactivate the sensor when the probe is not measuring.
For detailed specifications, the reader is referred to corresponding Campbell Scientific Instruction Manual for the
Model 108 Temperature Probe.
3.4.2 Installation
The Model 108 temperature sensor is installed or submerged near the water surface and 20 meters inside water
suspended from the buoy. The sensor to be installed and submerged at the water surface can be securely tied
against the buoy. Attach an appropriate counterweight to the cable of the other sensor to be installed at 20 meters
depth in order to prevent the sensor from unnecessary floating inside water. Mark the cable of the sensor for exact
positioning of the sensor inside water.
