9.2 Cannot Reinsert Rebooted PCs onto a Properly Operating Ring
The network is functioning properly except that any PC rebooted on the ring cannot reinsert onto the ring. Also, new PCs
not previously on the ring are unable to gain access to the ring.
NOTE: These symptoms indicate a ring poll failure. A ring poll failure occurs when a station on the ring
does not report itself as a standby monitor. When this happens, there is no neighbor notification from that
point to the Active Monitor. The Active Monitor will report the ring poll failure and transmit an Active Monitor
frame to start the notification process again. If there are any users trying to insert between the Active
Monitor and the failing station, they will be able to insert. It is important to note that those that are still
actively on the ring are able to function properly.
To find the failing station, check the station list in SPEL. The list reports on all the stations up to the one before the failing
station.
Example: If the Station List screen shows only stations 1 through 5 reporting, then station 6 would be the failing station.
Note that an analyzer can also report this failure. When the Active Monitor reports a ring poll failure it includes, in the detail
of the frame, the last station to actively participate in the process.
Can you identify the failing station?

Reboot or remove the failing station from the ring.
Can you now reboot a PC and reinsert it on the ring or insert a new PC on the ring?

There may be more than one failing station on the ring. Check the station list in SPEL or use an analyzer again as
previously discussed to determine if there is another failing station.
Can you identify another failing station?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Reboot or remove the failing station from the ring.
Can you now reboot a PC and reinsert it on the ring or insert a new PC on the ring?

Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Repeat the above procedure as necessary until all failing stations have been identified and either rebooted or removed
from the ring.
