7.1 Initial Charge
All cells are sh ipped f ully charg ed f rom the fact ory with no need f or an initia l fr eshening or equali zation
charge. The cells shoul d be constant voltage c har ged at the average f loat voltag es as noted in Table 1
below. Howe ver, when i n stor age or transit f or an extended per iod (espe cia lly at temper atures abo ve
77°F/25°C) or when the number of c ells is great er than 24 cel ls; it is rec om mended the bat tery system be
given an initia l f reshenin g char ge (see T able 1) at instal lati on.

Notes:
a. Bat t ery float volt age should be set at Table 1 average cell voltage multipli ed by the number of cells in the battery string.
Individual c ell float volt ages m ay vary by +0.10/-0.05 volts from the average in a singl e string.
b. Average string float voltage must be adjusted based on temperatures which are above or below 77°F (25°C) - see section 8.4.
c. Charging tim e will vary due to temperature if cell temperature is bel ow 60°F (16°C), double the charge time for initial or equalize charge.
d. If a battery load test will be perform ed within 90 days of installation, an init i al freshening charge followed by a 72 hour float charge
(per IEEE 1187) is required to ensure full capacity.
7.2 Initial Charge Records
At the completion of the initial charge and after the cells have been on f loat c harge f or approximate ly one week ,
record voltages of the individual cells, the total battery voltage and ambient tem perature. Retain this
information in your files for future reference. This information establishes a base l ine for futur e r eference.
The inf or m ation below must be recorded or ref er to RS-1992 found in the Appendix E. Mak e a photocopy of
the form and use it whenever necessary to record readings taken on the battery.
