Dropsizeinanultrasonicallyproducedsprayisgovernedbythefrequencyat
whichthenozzlevibrates,andbythesurfacetensionanddensityoftheliquid
beingatomized.However,frequencyisthepredominantfactor.Mediandrop
sizeisinverselyproportionaltofrequencytothe2/3power.Thus,thehigherthe
frequencythesmallerthemediandropsize.
Typically,thedropsizedistributionfromultrasonicnozzlesfollowsalognormal
distributioncurve.Insimpleterms,thisdistributionhasthefamiliarbellshape
butonalogarithmicscale.Thechartshowsthisdistributiononacumulativeba
sisforseveralnozzlefrequenciesforwater.
Variousparameterscanbeusedtocharacterizethemeanandmediandrop
sizeofaparticulardropdistribution.Thenumbermediandiameterdefinesthe
50%pointindropsize–thatis,onehalfofthenumberofdropsinthespray
havediameterslargerthanthisvaluewhiletheotherhalfhavediameters
