BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Setting up Follow these steps to set up your BIG Button + ready for use Plan the location of your BIG Button + The following points should be considered: Situate your product close enough to the telephone socket so that the cable will reach. Do not stand it on carpets or other similar surfaces that generate fibres as this may reduce the ringing sound and clog inside mechanisms.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 1 Insert the batteries Please note you will require 2 x AAA batteries to benefit from the BT Answer 1571/Call Minder message waiting indication. These are not included. Lift the battery cover and insert the batteries as shown. Note Batteries are only required if you want to use the 1571 feature. You will still be able to make and receive calls via the handset without batteries fitted. However, the message waiting indicator will not function.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Battery low indicator The batteries power the Message Waiting Indicator lamp. The normal flash rate when messages are waiting is every 2 seconds. When the batteries are running low and a message is waiting, the flash rate slows to once every 6 seconds. 2 Plug your BIG Button + into the telephone socket If you do not have a modern style socket, call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 and ask for a BT engineer to come and fit the correct socket.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 3 Ringer volume The switch is found on the base of your phone. Set the volume of the ringer to Either High, Low or Off. Note If the ringer is set to off, the call indicator light will still flash to indicate someone is calling you.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 4 Ringer tone select The switch is found on the base of your phone. This switch allows you to select the pitch required for the ringer. R1: For a low pitched tone. R2: For a medium pitched tone. R3: For a high pitched tone.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 5 Amplify selection The switch is found on the base of your phone. Choose between either incoming or outgoing settings. Incoming makes the caller’s voice louder. Outgoing makes your voice louder at the other end of the call. Note When the Amplify button is used it will increase the volume of all sounds that enter the microphone, so if you can, reduce any background noise whenever you use this feature.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 6 Time Break Recall and Earth Recall selection The switch is found on the base of your phone. Your phone will already be set to TB. If you are a residential customer this will help you to use some Network Services such as Call Waiting, as long as you subscribe to this service. If you are using your BIG Button + on a switchboard you may need to move this switch to TE to transfer calls. Call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 for details.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Using your BIG Button + Making and receiving calls To make a call Lift the handset and listen for a dialling tone. Dial the number you require. To end the call, replace the handset. Hearing Aid compatibility As this telephone is fitted with an Inductive Coupler, hearing aid wearers may benefit from switching their hearing aid to the middle ‘T’ position and holding the earpiece up to the aid, not their ear.

Simply pick up the handset and speak. Secrecy When on a call you can talk to someone in the same room without your caller hearing. To switch secrecy on and off During a call, press and release the SECRECY button. The Secrecy light will come on to show that secrecy is on.

The phone will automatically redial the last number dialled. One-Touch memory To store phone numbers in the One-Touch memory Note During all storing operations the secrecy light will flash. Your BIG Button + has three One-Touch memory buttons. The middle button is already programmed to contact BT’s network answering services via 1571.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Overwriting the 1571 code stored in the middle memory button will allow you to store a number of your own choice. To do this, follow the ‘STORE’ instructions below. Note You can store a phone number under each of these buttons and dial the number by pressing just the one button. To store numbers in the memory, use the STORE button. This is located under the memory label which is underneath the handset.

To dial a number stored in the One-Touch memory Lift the handset. Press the One-Touch memory button under which the phone number is stored. The phone number is dialled automatically.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Quickdial memory To store phone numbers in the Quickdial memory Your BIG Button + also has 10 Two-Touch memory locations in the keypad, which are dialled by using the QUICKDIAL button. Lift the handset. Press the STORE button. Quickdial Press the QUICKDIAL button. 0...9 Press the 0-9 keypad button under which you want to store the number. Enter the number you want to store. Press the STORE button. The phone number is now stored. Replace the handset.

Quickdial memory label Use the memory label to keep a record of which 0-9 location code you have used for each number. A large print version of this is included at the end of this user guide. Quickdial Press the QUICKDIAL button. 0...9 Press the 0-9 location under which the number you require is stored. The phone number is dialled automatically. To change numbers stored in the memory To change numbers stored in the memory, simply repeat the process of storing the original numbers but enter the new number.

Amplify – and + allow you to decrease or increase the level of amplification. The setting last used on Amplify will restore each time you turn amplify on. To increase the amplification press the + button. To decrease, press the – button. To turn Amplify off, just press the AMPLIFY button again. The red LED will light up to show when amplify is switched on.
BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 Voice mail indication If you have subscribed to BT Answer 1571 or Call Minder, your BIG Button + will indicate when you have received a voice message by the message waiting indicator light flashing (provided you have batteries fitted). BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder are automated answering services located at your local telephone exchange which will take messages when you are out, engaged on another call or on the Internet.

You will hear the phone dialling out and after a few seconds you will be connected automatically to your voice mail service. You can also dial 1571 manually to access your network answering service.

When messages have been left or you replace the handset leaving messages unplayed there will be a delay of approximately 1 minute before the message waiting indicator light flashes. Note The message waiting indicator is activated by an interrupted dial tone which you can hear when you pick up your phone.

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line. Your BIG Button + has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 is exceeded, the telephones may not ring. With different telephone types there is no guarantee of ringing, even when the REN is less than 4.

BIG Button + ~ 4th Edition ~ 15th April ’02 ~ 4380 1. Drill two holes (diameter 8mm) for the screws vertically apart. Insert the wall plugs provided (if required). WALL PLUG SCREW WALL 102 mm 2. Drive the screws into the wall, leaving about 5mm free on which to hang the phone. 3. Press the phone line cable into the groove on the base of the phone, so that the phone lies flat against the wall.
