WARNING • Plastic bags are used in the packaging of your printer. To avoid danger of suffocation, please keep these bags away from babies and children. • This printer is heavy and weighs approximately 41.9 lb. (19.0 kg). To prevent injuries use at least two people to lift the printer. Be careful not to pinch your fingers when you put the printer back down. 2 IMPORTANT Install the drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies 3 Remove the packing material from the printer a • Save all packing material and the carton in case you have to ship your printer. Unpack the four drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies and gently shake each of them from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly. • DO NOT plug in the AC power cord yet. a b Remove the packing tape from the outside of the printer.
c Slide all four of the drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies into the printer as shown in the illustration. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the printer. a b C - Cyan Y - Yellow M - Magenta K - Black d Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer. While pressing the green paper-guide release lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots.
d 5 Put paper in the tray, and make sure that the paper is below the maximum paper mark a. The side to be printed on must be face down. Print a test page IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interface cable yet. IMPORTANT a Make sure that the printer power switch is off. b Connect the AC power cord to the printer. Make sure the paper guides touch the sides of the paper so it will feed properly. e Put the paper tray firmly back in the printer. Make sure that it is completely inserted into the printer.
e 6 Press Go. The printer prints a test page. Check that the test page has printed correctly. Set your language on the control panel 㻡 㻡 Note This function will not be available after the first print job you send from your computer. a b c d Press + or - to choose General Setup. Press OK. General Setup Press OK again. Local Language Press + or - to choose your language. Press OK to accept. English Press Cancel to exit from Menu. Now go to Go to the next page to install the printer driver.

USB Windows® For USB Interface Cable Users 8 Install the printer driver and connect the printer to your computer d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Choose your printer model and the language. IMPORTANT • DO NOT connect the USB interface cable yet. Note If the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then doubleclick start.exe.
USB Note i When this screen appears, turn on the printer's power switch. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector marked with the symbol, and then connect the cable to the computer. Click Next. g When the License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the License Agreement. IMPORTANT DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. h Remove the label covering the USB interface connector.
USB j When this screen appears, click Finish. Note • If you want to register your product on-line, check On-Line Registration. • If you do not want to set your printer as Default printer, uncheck Set as Default Printer. • If you want to disable the Status Monitor, uncheck Enable Status Monitor. Finish The installation is now complete.
USB Macintosh For USB Interface Cable Users Remove the label covering the USB interface connector. Double-click the Start Here OSX icon. Follow the on-screen instructions. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector marked with a symbol, and then connect the cable to your Macintosh. Note Please see the User’s Guide on the CD-ROM to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver). f Choose Local Connection, and then click Next. Follow the on-screen instructions.
USB g h Follow the on-screen instructions until this screen appears. Choose your machine from the list, and then click OK. When this screen appears, click Next. Note When the Brother Support screen appears, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Finish 12 The installation is now complete.
Wired Network Windows® For Wired Network Interface Cable Users 8 TCP/IP For Peer-to-Peer network printer users 1 d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Choose your printer model and the language. TCP/IP Note Note • If you are going to connect the printer to your network, we recommend that you contact your system administrator prior to installation or see the Network User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.
Wired Network Note Windows® i • For Windows Vista® and Windows® 7, when the User Account Control screen appears, click Continue or Yes. • If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom Setup and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS (PostScript Emulation) Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.
Wired Network k Windows® Click Finish. Note • If you want to register your product on-line, check On-Line Registration. • If you do not want to set your printer as Default printer, uncheck Set as Default Printer. • If you want to disable the Status Monitor, uncheck Enable Status Monitor. • If you disable your Personal Firewall software (e.g. Windows® Firewall), turn it back on.

Wired Network Macintosh For Wired Network Interface Cable Users 8 Connect the printer to your Macintosh and install the driver e Choose Wired Network Connection (Ethernet), and then click Next. Follow the onscreen instructions. IMPORTANT Make sure there are no USB Flash memory drive inserted. a Connect the network interface cable to the LAN connector marked with a symbol and then connect it to a free port on your hub. Note It may take a few minutes for installation to complete.
Wired Network g Macintosh When this screen appears, click Next. Note When the Brother Support screen appears, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Finish The installation is now complete.
For Wireless Network Users For Wireless Network Interface Users 8 Before you begin First you must configure the wireless network settings of your machine to communicate with your network access point/router. After the machine is configured to communicate with your access point/router, computers on your network will have access to the machine. To use the machine from these computers, you will need to install the printer driver.
For Wireless Network Users 9 Choose your wireless setup method The following instructions will offer two methods for setting up your Brother machine in a wireless network environment. Choose the method you prefer for your environment. Note To setup your machine in any other wireless environment, you can find instructions in the Network User's Guide.
For Wireless Network Users b One push configuration using Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS™ If your wireless access point/router supports automatic wireless (one-push) setup (Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS™) Now go to 22 page 27
Wireless Network Windows® Configuration using the Installation CD-ROM and temporarily using a USB cable (For Windows® Users) 10 Configure the wireless settings d Choose Wireless Setup and Driver Install (Recommended), and then click Next. IMPORTANT You need to temporarily use a USB cable during configuration (cable not included). a Put the installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If prompted, select your model and language.
Wireless Network h i If the confirmation screen appears, check the box and click Next. When the following screen appears, check Yes if you want to connect with the listed SSID. Click Next and go to l. k l Windows® Enter the Network Key you wrote down in step 9 on page 21 and then enter the key again in Confirm Network Key, then click Next. Click Next. The settings will be sent to your machine. The wizard will search for wireless networks available from your machine.
Wireless Network Macintosh Configuration using the Installation CD-ROM and temporarily using a USB cable (For Macintosh Users) 10 Configure the wireless settings e Read the Important Notice. Check the box after you confirm the SSID and Network Key, and then click Next. IMPORTANT You need to temporarily use a USB cable during configuration (cable not included). a b Choose Wireless Network Connection and then click Next.
Wireless Network Note j Macintosh Click Next. The settings will be sent to your machine. • If the list is blank, check that the access point has power and is broadcasting the SSID, and then see if the machine and the access point are within range for wireless communication. Then, click Refresh. • If your access point is set to not broadcast the SSID you can manually add it by clicking the Advanced button. Follow the on-screen instructions for entering the Name (SSID), and then click Next.
For Wireless Network Users One push configuration using Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS™ 11 a b c Configure the wireless settings If the LCD shows Connected, the printer has successfully connected to your access point/router. You can now use your printer in a wireless network. Confirm your WLAN access point/router has the Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS™ symbol as shown below. If the LCD shows Connection Error, a session overlap has been detected.
Wireless Network Windows® Install the Printer Driver (Windows® XP/XP Professional x64 Edition/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7) 12 Before you install d Choose Driver Install Only and click Next. Make sure that your computer is ON and you are logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT • If there are any programs running, close them. Note • The screens may differ depending on your operating system.
Wireless Network Finish Windows® The installation is now complete. Note • If you use a specified IP Address for the machine, you must set the Boot Method to Static by using the control panel. For more information, see Network menu in the Network User's Guide. • Depending on your security settings, a Windows Security or antivirus software window may appear when using the machine or its software. Please allow or permit the window to continue.
Wireless Network Macintosh Install the Printer Driver (Mac OS X 10.4.11 - 10.6.x) 12 Before you install c Choose Wireless Network Connection and click Next. Make sure your machine is connected to the power and your Macintosh is ON. You must be logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT For Mac OS X 10.4.10 users, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.11 - 10.6.x. For Network Users Web Based Management (web browser) Reset the network settings to the factory default The Brother print server is equipped with a web server that allows you to monitor its status or change some of its configuration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). To reset all network settings of the print server to its factory default, follow the steps below. a Note • The login name for the Administrator is ‘admin’ (case sensitive) and the default password is ‘access’.

Match the front side of the printer to the “FRONT” mark on the Styrofoam pieces. Put the Styrofoam piece for the drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies on the top of the printer. Reinstall the original packing material into the printer. g Close the top cover. h Put the waste toner box in the Styrofoam piece.
