Thank you for purchasing this quality-built Briggs & Stratton engine. We’re pleased that you’ve placed your confidence in the Briggs & Stratton brand. When operated and maintained according to the instructions in this manual, your Briggs & Stratton product will provide many years of dependable service. This manual contains safety information to make you aware of the hazards and risks associated with engines and how to avoid them. It also contains instructions for the proper use and care of the engine.
Operator Safety General Information This is a single cylinder, air-cooled engine. It is a low emissions engine. In the state of California, Model 120000, 150000, 200000, 210000 engines are certified by the California Air Resources Board to meet emissions standards for 250 hours. Such certification does not grant the purchaser, owner or operator of this engine any additional warranties with respect to the performance or operational life of this engine.
Operator Safety WARNING Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable and explosive. Fire or explosion can cause severe burns or death. When Adding Fuel • Turn engine off and let engine cool at least 2 minutes before removing the fuel cap. • Fill fuel tank outdoors or in well-ventilated area. • Do not overfill fuel tank. Fill tank to approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm) below top of neck to allow for fuel expansion.
Operator Safety WARNING Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. • When starting engine, pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt and then pull rapidly to avoid kickback. • Remove all external equipment/engine loads before starting engine. • Direct-coupled equipment components such as, but not limited to, blades, impellers, pulleys, sprockets, etc.

Operation Oil Capacity We recommend the use of Briggs & Stratton Warranty Certified oils for best performance. Other high-quality detergent oils are acceptable if classified for service SF, SG, SH, SJ or higher. Do not use special additives. 10W-30 SAE 30 Oil Recommendations Outdoor temperatures determine the proper oil viscosity for the engine. Use the chart to select the best viscosity for the outdoor temperature range expected.
Operation Fuel Recommendations Fuel must meet these requirements: • Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline. • A minimum of 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON). High altitude use, see below. • Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable. CAUTION: Do not use unapproved gasolines, such as E85. Do not mix oil in gasoline or modify the engine to run on alternate fuels. This will damage the engine components and void the engine warranty.
Operation Fresh Start® Fuel Cap WARNING Contents are HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED. Avoid contact to eyes, skin, or clothing. Do not take internally. Avoid breathing the mist or vapor. Overexposure to eyes or skin can cause irritation. KEEP STABILIZER OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. Fuel stabilizer is a hazardous chemical. ** 1. Remove the fuel cap (A) from the fuel tank (C) (Figure 5). 2. Push the small end (D) of the cartridge (B) into the fuel cap. 3. Press (E) to snap the cartridge into the fuel cap.
Operation How To Start The Engine WARNING Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. • When starting engine, pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt and then pull rapidly to avoid kickback. 2. Make sure equipment drive controls, if equipped, are disengaged. See the equipment manual for location and operation of these controls. 3.
Operation Note: If the engine does not start after three attempts, see the Troubleshooting section. WARNING: Rapid retraction of the starter cord (kickback) will pull your hand and arm toward the engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. When starting engine, pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt and then pull rapidly to avoid kickback. 9.
Maintenance WARNING Regular maintenance will improve performance and extend the life of the equipment. Use only original equipment replacement parts. Other parts may not perform as well, may damage the unit, and may result in injury. In addition, use of other parts may void your warranty. We recommend that you see any Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer for all maintenance and service of the engine and engine parts. Unintentional sparking can result in fire or electric shock.
Maintenance How To Access The Spark Plug (2-Piece Snow Hood) To access the spark plug, the snow hood must be removed as follows: B 1. Remove the safety key (A). Keep the safety key out of reach of children. See Figure 12. 2. Grasp the choke control knob (B) and pull up to remove. A 3. Remove the mounting screws (C, Figure 13). 4. Carefully remove the top part of the snow hood (D). Do not disconnect the primer hose (E) or the stop switch wire (F). 5. The spark plug (G) can now be accessed. 6.
Maintenance How To Access The Spark Plug (1-Piece Snow Hood) C B To access the spark plug, the snow hood must be removed as follows: I 1. Remove the safety key (A). Keep the safety key out of reach of children. See Figure 14. 2. Grasp the choke control knob (B) and pull up to remove. 3. Remove the mounting screws (C). A 4. Carefully remove the snow hood (D). Maintenance Inspect Muffler And Spark Arrester WARNING A Running engines produce heat. Engine parts, especially muffler, become extremely hot. Severe thermal burns can occur on contact. Combustible debris, such as leaves, grass, brush, etc. can catch fire. • Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool before touching. • Remove accumulated debris from muffler area and cylinder area.
Maintenance How To Change The Oil Add oil CAUTION: Used oil is a hazardous waste product and must be disposed of properly. Do not discard with household waste. Check with your local authorities, service center, or dealer for safe disposal/recycling facilities. • Place engine level. • Clean the oil fill area of any debris. • See the Specifications section for oil capacity. Remove Oil Models with oil fill cap 1.
Maintenance Storage (over 30 days) WARNING Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable and explosive. Fire or explosion can cause severe burns or death. When Storing Gasoline Or Equipment With Fuel In Tank • Store away from furnaces, stoves, water heaters or other appliances that have pilot lights or other ignition sources because they can ignite gasoline vapors. When Transporting Equipment • The fuel tank must be empty or the fuel shut-off valve must be in the closed position.
Troubleshooting PROBLEM CAUSE CORRECTION Will not start Out of fuel Add clean fresh fuel. Flooded carburetor Move the choke control to run and the throttle control, if equipped, to fast. Then follow the starting procedure until the engine starts. Low oil Check oil level. Add to FULL mark on dipstick.
