5.6 Adjusting the Torques at the Hubs
The rewinders for the transfer ribbon and the media are equipped with slip clutches. The transfer ribbon supply hub
is braked during printing by another slip clutch. The slip clutches are used to adjust the torques of the hubs.
The correct adjustment of the torques of these clutches is essential:
Ribbon take up hub for the exact transport of the transfer ribbon during label transport,
Internal rewinder for a good rewinding quality at the media,
Ribbon supply hub for avoiding wrinkles at the transfer ribbon feed.
The rotation is characterized by the torque. The torque results from the traction F which works vertical to the rotary
axis and the distance l between the working line of the traction and the rotary axis.
So the physical relation between torque and traction is as follows:
M = F x l M = torque
F = traction
l = distance
Measuring the Traction at the Internal Rewinder
The traction is measured by using a string which is wound around the rewinder.
In this case the distance l results from the radius of the rewind hub (20 mm).

Figure 5h Measuring the traction at the internal rewinder
1 Spring scale, 25 N
2 Internal rewinder
Remove all label stock from the printer.
Wind the string several times around the internal rewinder (2).
NOTICE!
Pay attention to the wind direction as shown in the î‚¿gure.
3. Attach the spring scale (1), 25 N, to the end of the string and move it vertically upwards until the hub starts to
rotate.
4. Read the measured traction value F.
If the readings differ from the set value, the clutch has to be adjusted.
Set value:
Internal rewinder M = 20 - 30 Ncm
l = 2 cm
--> F = 10 - 15 N
