At first glance the Imperial already
looks pretty comprehensive. It has
six modes ranging from straight
delay through to two types of ping
pong and a myriad of controls
covering everything from Drive and
Duck through to separate left and
right Pitch, Smear, Colour and
Chorus; but it’s only when you start
to play with it that you see its full
potential. It’s possible to set
individual delay times left and right
(or gang them together) and then
further offset the right channel
(+/-100ms) so you can create swung
stereo grooves. But the big thing is
that little e button next to most of
the controls. This allows you to edit
the effect further; so, for example,
the drive control has five different
modes each with control over
character, tone and blend. Smear
has feedback amount, size and a
LPF while Duck has attack and
release times along with ratio. A lot
of thought has gone into it, and
some incredible sounds come out.

Nothing can affect an instrument’s musical
performance and spatial position as much as a delay
so it’s worth having a few to choose from – especially
with the diverse characteristics of these

Sandman Pro $99
Having recently reviewed the Sandman we already knew it was good, but
the Pro version hits another level. Delays can be stereo linked, offset or
totally independent. There are separate controls for straight feedback,
cross-feed and diffusion and high and low-pass filters, but it is the
multiple modes which really set it apart. You get Classic Tape, which will
slur like tape, Modern Instant which allows for slur and glitch-free delay
changes, Pitch Shifter and Glitch Shifter which can give some wild pitch
and time effects, a comprehensive Multi-Tap and a Reverse. There is a
freeze function that allows you to trap a sound and edit the front and
end while messing with its sample rate and to top it all you have
multiple modulators (each with multiple waveforms) which allow you to
modulate every parameter. The results are stunning and the creative
rhythmic and textural possibilities almost endless. We love it.
