•Castironblockandheadsprovideadurablefoundation
•Larger exhaust valves than 6.0L
– Improve engine breathing
– Optimize fuel economy and performance
•Improved emissions
– Reduced particulate output by 90 percent
– Emits 85 percent less smog-forming pollutants than
previous model diesel engine
• Improvedenginecontrolmodule(ECM)
– Fuel and engine controls integrated into the same cast
aluminum housing
– Durability tests doubled to ensure robustness and long life
•High-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel system pressurizes the
fuel system to 28,000 psi and injects the fuel into the cylinders
through piezo-actuated injectors
•Piezo-actuated injectors are capable of delivering up
tofiveinjectionspercombustioncyclefor:
– Instant response for optimized acceleration, improved
cold start at –20 degrees F, and better emissions control
– Quiet operation throughout the entire rpm range (similar
to gasoline-engine noise levels)
– Injectors and fuel pump placed inside valve cover for
quieter ride
• Dual Sequential Turbo helps improve response throughout the
engine’spowerbandandincludesthefollowingbenefits:
– Better low-speed performance, improved acceleration
and power at altitude
– First turbo in the series features an Electronic Variable
Response Turbocharger (EVRT
TM
). The second, larger,
fixed low-pressure turbo comes on at higher rpm and
at optimum speed
– EVRT comes on at low rpm to provide extra boost
at takeoff
– EVRT changes the position of the turbine blades based
on engine demand
– As rpm increase, the larger fixed low-pressure turbo kicks
in to boost power through the middle of the torque curve
– Fixed low-pressure turbo takes over at optimum speed

Engine Idle Shutdown (63T)
•EngineIdleShutdownisrequiredon6.4Ldieselwith
automatictransmissioninthefollowingstates:CA,CT,DE,
GA, ME, NC, NJ, NY and PA. Optional on 6.4L diesel with
automatic transmission in all other states. Can be deleted
for vehicles ordered by dealers in CA, CT, DE, GA, ME,
NC, NJ, NY and PA for delivery outside those states.
California and affected green states require nonexempted
vehicles with diesel engines rated over 14K GVW (F-450)
to incorporate an idle shutdown system to prevent extended
engine idle periods. After a predetermined period, the engine
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) automatically shuts down
the engine and triggers the accessory module to shut down
power to the accessories to minimize battery drain
Engine Idle Shutdown Exemption (63E)
