TowCommand
TM
System
Since roughly 90 percent of Super Duty customers tow with
their trucks, putting together a “system” to make this aspect of
towing easier was a high priority. The TowCommand System,
along with the impressive braking system standard on all
Super Duty Pickup models and the Tow/Haul function of the
TorqShift
TM
transmission, does just that by grouping the features
and options that will make towing easier and more enjoyable
for your customers. The driver-selectable Tow/Haul function is
able to reduce gear search on steep uphill grades or in hilly
terrain and provides added vehicle speed control while
descending grades.
The system includes:
TowCommand Integrated Trailer Brake Controller
Manual telescoping trailer towing mirrors with manual glass (XL)
Manual telescoping trailer towing mirrors with power/heated
glass and integrated clearance lights/turn signals (XLT/Lariat)
Requires TorqShift 5-speed automatic overdrive transmission
with Tow/Haul function
TowCommand Integrated Trailer
Brake Controller
The industry’s first-in-class fully Integrated Trailer Brake
Controller offers smooth operation and control features
unmatched by any aftermarket controller, and it’s factory-
installed and comes warranted by Ford Motor Company.
The benefits include:
The controller uses actual braking pressure, measured inside
the truck’s master cylinder, to calculate how much braking
force to apply. This information is sent to the trailer brakes
in real time so that the braking of the truck and the trailer
are matched, helping to provide smooth, controlled stops
Since the trailer brake controller is fully integrated, not only
into the instrument panel but into the truck’s onboard
computer, this is the first and only controller to be able to
adapt its output based on the status of the Anti-lock Braking
System (ABS). When the ABS module senses the tow
vehicle’s brakes experiencing low traction conditions, the
controller’s trailer braking strategy is altered to compensate
for traction conditions as well. Integration with vehicle ABS
decreases the likelihood of trailer brake lockup
Initial setup and adjustment of the trailer brake controller is
simple and intuitive. If the trailer electrical connections are
good, a green indicator will illuminate in the display. The
driver then adjusts the GAIN control to correspond with the
weight of the trailer. Further adjustment may be required if
trailer weight or surface conditions change. Refer to the
Owner’s Guide for additional information
Provides instant visual/audible warning in case of
accidental trailer disconnect
NOTE: The available Ford TowCommand Integrated Trailer
Brake Controller has only been verified to be compatible
with trailers having electric-actuated drum brakes (one
to four axles) and not hydraulic surge or electric-over-
hydraulic types.
