V-8 Turbo Diesel
The available 6.0L Power Stroke V-8 turbo diesel is a four-valves-
per-cylinder design for outstanding torque and horsepower. The
engine block and cylinder heads are made of cast iron for
unmatched durability and long life. (Based on vehicles in
operation from 1994–2004, the Power Stroke is the longest-
lasting diesel engine.) A separate, rigid bedplate is attached to
the bottom of the engine block and additional ribbing structure is
cast into the block to further enhance the durability.
The Power Stroke, like the Triton gasoline engines, incorporates a
number of advanced technologies to provide its remarkable
performance numbers. Some of these technologies are:
Hydraulic rail fuel injection and electrohydraulic Generation
2 injectors help reduce engine noise by way of precise fuel
rate and timing control
Charge air cooling through a large air-to-air intercooler
increases air charge density
An Electronic Variable Response Turbocharger (EVRT
TM
)
which is able to change the position of the turbine blades
based on engine demand for excellent low-speed response
as well as high-speed efficiency
The 6.0L Power Stroke engine also benefits owners with
convenient serviceability features designed into the engine:
The secondary fuel filter (4-micron filtration) is mounted on
top of the engine for maintenance ease
The oil filter is also located on top of the engine and uses a
cartridge rather than a canister design for easy, clean filter
changes and disposal
The glow plugs, used to assist in cold engine starting, are
located outside of the valve cover for more convenient
service if necessary
The PowerCore air cleaner provides a large filter area for
effective removal of airborne contaminants

5-speed Automatic Overdrive Transmission
Originally designed and developed to be used with the high torque output of the
6.0L Power Stroke diesel, this robust transmission is optional on all Super Duty
Pickups with gasoline or diesel engines
Torque converter design maximizes low-speed torque output
Large fluid pump provides superior lubrication and cooling
Robust, precision-engineered gears and clutch material contribute to durability
Pure electronic shift controls work with the Electronic Throttle Control of the engine
to optimize shifts and vehicle performance and responsiveness
Selectable Tow/Haul mode uses sophisticated electronic controls to sense towing
and hauling demands and adjusts its operation to meet them. When hauling a
heavy load or trailer, the Tow/Haul mode reduces gear hunting, improves
power delivery and even uses engine braking to help control vehicle
speed when descending hills
