Brief explanations of some of the terms and abbreviations used in this manual

10/100/1000 Base-T IEEE-802.3 specification for 10, 100 or 1000 MBit/s Ethernet
ARP Address Resolution Protocol: a protocol for mapping MAC and
IP addresses
Baud Unit of measure for the speed of data transmission
Bit/s Bits per second, the actual data rate
CIF Common Intermediate Format,
video format with 352 × 288/240 pixels
DNS Domain Name Service
FTP File Transfer Protocol
Full duplex Simultaneous data transmission in both directions (sending and
receiving)
GoP Group of Pictures
HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol
ICMP Internet Control Message Protocol
ID Identification: a machine readable character string
IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
IGMP Internet Group Management Protocol
Internet Protocol The main protocol used on the Internet, normally in conjunction
with the Transfer Control Protocol (TCP): TCP/IP
IP See Internet Protocol
IP address A 4-byte number uniquely defining each unit on the Internet.
It is usually written in dotted decimal notation, for example
"209.130.2.193"
iSCSI Storage over IP process for storage networks; specifies how
storage protocols are operated over IP.
ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network
JPEG An encoding process for still images (Joint Photographic Experts
Group)
kBit/s Kilobits per second, the actual data rate
LAN See Local area network
Local area network A communications network serving users within a limited geo-
graphical area such as a building or university campus. It is con-
trolled by a network operating system and uses a transfer proto-
col.
LUN Logical Unit Number (logical drive in iSCSI storage systems)
