OBD: european On Board Diagnostics
Malfunction indicator (MI)
The malfunction indicator is a yellow indi-
cator lamp with the symbol of an engine.
In accordance with the OBD guideline
(as of EURO 3), the indicator lamp lights up if:
Ñ A fault occurs that leads to cylinder shutoff to protect
the catalytic converter (misfire detection). In this case,
the lamp flashes as long as the error is present.
Ñ An exhaust-gas-related fault occurs in two successive
driving cycles
Ñ The
engine management / transmission management
detects a “control unit self-test” fault
Ñ The ignition key is in the ON position without the engine
running (lamp monitoring function)
With OBD (On Board Diagnostics), a Europe-wide
standard for emission values and their correct test-
ing was introduced.
Bosch test equipment makes the perfect
diagnosis possible
Ñ Standardized diagnosis interface
Ñ S
tandardized diagnosis protocol
Ñ Standardized diagnosis statements
Ñ Uniform diagnostics connector
Ñ Since 01.01.2001, new vehicles in Europe fitted with
a gasoline engine and since autumn 2004 those with a
diesel engine can only be registered if they are equipped
with the European On Board Diagnostics system
Aims of OBD
Ñ Continuous monitoring of components relevant
to emissions on all vehicles
Ñ Immediate detection and display of important
emissions increases over the entire service life
of each and every vehicle
Ñ Permanently low exhaust emissions
Ñ Pr
otection of vehicle components at risk
(e.g. catalytic converter)
Ñ Storage of information regarding faults that
have occurred
Ñ T
ransmission of stored fault information to
the KTS 515 /200 /530/540/570/ 670
