SECTION VI: MAINTENANCE (cont.)
INSPECT THE VENTING SYSTEM
The vent system should be checked at least once a year for damage and blockage. A draft and
combustion test is also recommended.
If necessary, the water heater flue may be cleaned with a brush or flexible wire. Before
proceeding:
1) Turn the gas valve OFF.
2) Wait at least 5 minutes for the combustion chamber and flue to cool.
3) Use a brush or flexible wire to clean the flue. This can be done through the top of the flue.
It is not necessary to remove the burner.
4) Slide the brush down the flue at the base of each row of fins. This should knock any rust
flakes into the combustion chamber for removal.
WARNING
If the flue is blocked with soot this indicates serious combustion problems related to the
building and/or installation. These must be addressed before placing the water heater back
in operation.
5) Vacuum any sediment collected in the combustion chamber before restarting the heater.
Access to the combustion area can be obtained through the removal of the two access panels
and insulation. Be sure to replace all parts to their original positions prior to operating the
water heater.

Cannot light pilot
5) Pilot tube leaking 5) Tighten connection at thermostat
1) Refer to lighting instructions1) Gas control knob not positioned correctly
2) Air in gas line 2) Purge gas line
3) Excessive water temperature and pilot failure. 3) Replace thermostat *
Water too hot or not hot enough
1) Thermostat set too high or low 1) Adjust setting as required
2) Thermostat out of calibration 2) Replace thermostat *
Insufficient hot water
Rumbling noise during burner
operation
1) Scale or sediment build-up in tank 1) Clean/flush tank
1) Heater undersized for load 1) Reduce hot water usage rate
2) Low gas pressure 2) Check gas supply and manifold pressure
2) Combustion air openings or flue/venting restricted 2) Inspect and clean.
3) Inadequate combustion/ventilation air to room 3) See "Pre-Installation" section
Poor combustion (sooting, CO)
4) Single use gas shut-off device opened in thermostat 4) Replace thermostat *
1) Accumulation of scale on burner 1) Turn OFF burner and clean
Pilot will not stay lit when gas
control knob or pilot gas button is
released.
2) Bad thermocouple 2) Replace thermocouple
3) Safety magnet breakdown 3) Replace thermostat *
1) Thermocouple connection is loose 1) Tighten connection at thermostat
3) Clogged pilot orifice 3) Clean or replace
4) Pinched pilot tube 4) Repair or replace
