Automatic climate control* > Indicator lamps off: outside airflow is on > Left indicator lamp on – AUC mode: the system recognizes pollutants in the outside air and blocks the flow of air when necessary. The system then recirculates the air currently within the vehicle.
Automatic climate control* Roller sun blind* Microfilter/activated-charcoal filter The built-in microfilter removes dust and pollen from the incoming air. The activated-charcoal filter provides additional protection by filtering gaseous pollutants from the outside air. Your BMW center replaces this combined filter as a standard part of your scheduled maintenance. A substantial reduction in airflow indicates that the filter needs to be replaced before scheduled maintenance.

Special operating instructions 114 Break-in procedures To ensure that your vehicle continues to provide maximum economy throughout an extended service life, we request that you devote careful attention to the following instructions. Tires Engine and differential Owing to technical factors associated with their manufacture, tires do not achieve their full traction potential until an initial break-in period has elapsed. We thus ask you to drive with extra care during the first 200 miles/300 km.
Antilock Brake System (ABS) Brakes: do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light but consistent pedal pressure can lead to high temperatures, brake wear and possibly even brake failure. Hydroplaning: when driving on wet or slushy roads, reduce vehicle speed. If you do not, a wedge of water may form between the tires and the road surface.
Brake system Brake fluid level If the brake fluid level is too low and brake pedal travel has become longer, there may be a defect in one of the brake system's hydraulic circuits. If the brake rotors are corroded, they will tend to respond to braking with a pulsating effect that even extended brake applications will fail to cure. When driving in heavy rain and on wet roads it is a good idea to apply light Proceed to the nearest BMW cen- pressure to the brake pedal every few miles.
Wheels and tires Tire condition It is not merely the tire's service life, but also driving comfort and – above all else – driving safety that depend on the condition of the tires and the maintenance of the specified tire inflation pressure. Be sure to check the tire inflation pressure, including the pressure of the space-saver spare tire or the spare tire, on a regular basis, at least twice a month and before every extended journey, refer to page 25.
Tire condition Tire replacement ceed carefully to the nearest BMW center or professional tire center, or have the vehicle towed in to have it, its wheels or its tires inspected. Tire damage up to and including sudden and complete air loss can endanger the lives of both the vehicle occupants and other road users.< To maintain good handling and vehicle Traction response, use only tires of a single The traction grades, from highest to tread configuration from a single manu- lowest, are AA, A, B, and C.
Tire replacement BMW recommends the replacement of all tires – including the spare tire* – when the tires are no more than 6 years old, even if a tire life of 10 years is possible. Run Flat tires* Tread wear 200 Traction AA Temperature A BMW advises against using retreaded tires, since driving safety may be impaired. This is due to the possible variations in casing structures and, in some cases, to their extreme age, which can lead to a decrease in their durability.
Wheel and tire combinations Winter tires The right choice Choosing the right tire The correct wheel-tire combination affects various systems such BMW recommends using only as ABS, ASC+T/DSC and ADB/ wheels and tires that have been approved by BMW for use on your par- ADB-X/DBC. The function of these systems is impaired if improper wheel-tire ticular model. Although other wheels combinations are used.
Winter tires Only certain snow chains have been tested by BMW and determined and approved as roadworthy. Consult any BMW center for details. BMW recommends using only these approved finelink snow chains. Use them in pairs on either summer or winter tires, but only on both rear wheels.
In the engine compartment 122 Hood To release To open To close Pull the lever located under the lefthand side of the instrument panel. Pull the release handle and open the hood. Allow the hood to fall from a height of about 1 ft/30 cm so that it audibly engages. Do not attempt to service your vehicle if you do not have the required technical background.

Excess oil will damage the engine. Headlamp* and windshield washer system Capacity approx. 5.6 US quarts/5.3 liters Fill with water and – if required – with a washer antifreeze additive according to manufacturer's recommendations. We recommend that you mix the washer fluid before adding it to the reservoir.
Engine oil Wait until the level has dropped to just above the lower mark before adding oil. However, you should never let the oil drop below the lower mark. BMW engines are designed to operate without oil additives; the use of additives could lead to damage in some cases. This also applies to the manual transmission, the automatic transmission, the differential, and the power steering system.< Recommendation: have the oil changed at your BMW center.
Coolant Do not add coolant to the cooling system when the engine is hot. If you attempt to do so, escaping coolant can cause burns. Antifreeze and anti-corrosion agents are hazardous to health. You should always store them in original containers and in a location which is out of reach of children. Antifreeze and anti-corrosion agents are inflammable. For this reason, do not spill them on hot engine parts. They could ignite and cause serious burns.
Brake fluid Adding brake fluid For adding brake fluid or for determining and correcting the cause of brake fluid loss, consult your BMW center. Your BMW center is familiar with the specifications for factory-approved brake fluids – DOT 4. Brake fluid loss results in extended pedal travel. Refer to the information on page 116. Comply with the applicable environmental laws regulating the disposal of brake fluid.< Overview Controls Maintenance Repairs Parking brake warning lamp for Canadian models.
Maintenance 130 The BMW Maintenance System From a maintenance point of view, 62,000 miles/100,000 km accumulated in short-distance urban driving are not the equivalent of the same distance covered at moderate cruising speeds in long-distance highway travel. The BMW Maintenance System includes the Engine Oil Service and Inspections I and II. The BMW Maintenance System has been designed as a reliable means of providing maximum driving and operating safety – and as cost-effectively as possible for you.
Laws and regulations California Proposition 65 warning OBD interface socket 131 If the indicator blinks or flashes, this indicates a high level of engine misfire. Reduce speed and contact the nearest BMW center immediately. Severe Maintenance Controls An illuminated indicator informs you of the need for service, not that you need to stop the vehicle. However, the systems should be checked by your BMW center at the earliest possible opportunity.
