Enabling Simultaneous Monitoring
When you set up your display hardware, the HDR Master Display must be connected to output
A, and the Target Display must be connected to output B of whichever BMD video output
device you’re using. Then, you need to turn on the “Use dual outputs on SDI” checkbox in the
Master Settings of the Project Settings. At this point, assuming all of your connections are
compatible with one another, you should see an HDR image output to your HDR display, and a
trimmed image output to your SDR display.
Limitations
As of the time of this writing, there are some limitations when using the software CMU in
DaVinci Resolve.
The resolution for both the Master and Target output is limited to 1080; choosing a
higher resolution may cause problems.
This workflow does not work for Stereo 3D projects.
Each output is limited to Single Link (a single HD-SDI connection).
Output can be either 444 or 422.
Hardware Setup of Master and Target
Display Output for Dolby Vision
For studios doing more intensive HDR mastering work, a hardware CMU still has its place, as it
lets you monitor and adjust an HDR display simultaneously to an SDR display for side-by-side
trimming at high resolutions. This requires a somewhat more elaborate hardware setup,
consisting of the following equipment:
Your DaVinci Resolve grading workstation, outputting via either a DeckLink 8K,
DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, or an UltraStudio 4K Extreme video interface, or better
Mastering Monitor capable of outputting Dolby Vision levels suitable for the deliverable
you’re required to produce
An SDR (probably Rec. 709-calibrated) display
A standalone hardware video processor called theContent Management Unit (CMU),
which is a standard computer platform with a Video I/O card. The CMU is only available
from Dolby Authorized System Integrators; please contact Dolby for an Authorized
Systems Integrator near you.
