Determining the Mode of an Installed kV RSX
The kV RSX option board is not detected by the meter in either RS-232 or RS-485 simple serial
modes. There are no tables in the option board when it is in either of the simple serial modes.
There is no way to read the meter and find out what mode the option board is in. The mode can
be determined by observing the LED at the time of power up, one (1) blink for external modem
mode, two (2) blinks for RS-232 simple serial mode, and four (4) blinks for RS-485 simple serial
mode.
If it is not possible to cycle the power to observe this LED and the mode is not known, the mode
can be determined through process of elimination. First, read the kV meter using the
Smartcoupler and determine whether the kV RSX is detected by the meter through reading the
GE Device Table, installed options field. If using MeterMate, the presence of the kV RSX will be
reported if the board is in external modem mode. If the meter is detecting the kV RSX, then the
option board is in external modem mode. Otherwise, the kV RSX is in one of the two (2) simple
serial modes. To determine if the kV RSX is in RS-232 simple serial mode, try reading the meter
using a null modem cable connected between a PC and the communications option board. If the
meter can be read this way, it is in RS232 simple serial mode. If this fails, the kV RSX option
board is in the RS-485 simple serial mode.
