RS-232 Simple Serial Mode
RS-232 is used extensively for communications between computers and peripheral devices such
as the mouse, keyboard and etc. Another example is the use of the RS-232 port on a computer
to communicate with the kV meter using the Smartcoupler. The kV RSX, in RS-232 mode,
provides a straightforward, isolated, connection between the kV Meter and the host device. The
permanent connection of the kV Meter to a personal computer, for continuous data collection, is
an example.
The most convenient way to connect the kV RSX to a computer is to connect the kV RSX DB-9
communications cable to the computer's RS-232 port through a 9 pin null modem cable. It is
important to select a null modem cable that is shielded and that the end device (computer)
provide a path from this shield to ground. The shell of the kV RSX DB-9 connector is connected
to the shield which surrounds the wire in this cable. The RS-232 communications distance is
limited to 50 feet.
