You can disable S3TC in Quake 3 Arena using the following console commands:
/r_ext_compress_textures 0
/vid_restart
but be warned that this will cause the problems described in the 'On some levels in Quake 3 Arena I get
severe slowdowns with all of the settings maxed out. How can I fix this?' question.
If you type in the following command to the console it may help to reduce the effects of S3TC on the
sky:
/r_overbrightbits 0
/vid_restart

Q. Quake 3 Arena looks very dark in Windows 2000. How can I fix it?
The Quake 3 Arena 1.25 patch and above should fix this problem. If it doesn't you can also try the fixes
below.
Type the following command at the console:
/r_ignorehwgamma 1
/vid_restart
and see if it helps.
You can also try the following:
/r_ignorehwgamma 0
/r_overbrightbits 0
/vid_restart
This should mean that the brightness slider works as usual.
If that doesn't help, try typing the following commands at the console:
/r_mapoverbrightbits x
/vid_restart
where x is a value from 2 to 3.
