quite enough memory to store all the textures in the video memory on certain levels, such as Q3DM6,
Q3DM9, Q3DM11 and Q3DM15.
The following tip was provided by Korhan Uran:
As an alternative to this, if you don't mind editing console variables manually, type the following into the
console:
/r_texturebits 24
/vid_restart
This will turn texture colour depth to 24-bit which will not affect image quality but will reduce video
memory requirements.
Switching the AGP Aperture size to 256 helped some people to reduce the problem in some levels. See
the 'What should my AGP Aperture size be set to?' question for more information.
If you use the latest drivers then you do not have to do either of these things as S3TC support in OpenGL
is implemented, which means that all the textures can fit in Video RAM.

Q. The sky looks blocky and textures have strange colours in Quake 3 Arena with the latest
drivers installed. How can I fix this?
This is a by-product of the S3TC support in the latest drivers. Basically the S3TC format used by default in
Quake 3 Arena (DXTC1) forces textures to be in 16-bit colour instead of 32-bit.
The following registry key was found by Unwinder:
In the 6.47+ drivers, you can use the s3tcqualityon.reg registry file to force all OpenGL applications to
use DXTC3 compression instead of DXTC1 - available here:
http://www.geforcefaq.com/files/s3tcqualityon.reg
If you get problems, you can reenable DXTC1 compression using the s3tcqualityoff.reg registry file -
available here:
http://www.geforcefaq.com/files/s3tcqualityoff.reg
If these files don't seem to have any effect, you may have to edit them in Notepad and change the 0000 to
0001, or another value. Take a look at the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display
registry key using regedit and find out which number your graphics card is using.
The Windows 2000 equivalent files are available here:
http://www.geforcefaq.com/files/s3tcqualityonw2k.reg
http://www.geforcefaq.com/files/s3tcqualityoffw2k.reg

If you do not use the 6.47+ drivers, you can fix the problem in Quake 3 Arena only by forcing the game
to use DXTC3 compression instead of DXTC1. You can read more about this and download a patch at
the following website:
