TOP SECURITY
ROD MONUMENTS
Finned Rod Stabilizes
Monument
These are the same as the rod
monuments except, for the
top section, a security rod with
three aluminum ns is used.
This increases the stability of
the mark.
All sections of the monument,
including the top security
section, can be driven straight
into the soil, or the top section
can be isolated from the top
soil as shown above.
The ns of the top security
section can be peeled back with
vice grips if it is necessary to cut
the top section. This enables
the cap to be tapped on.

SLEEVED ROD MONUMENT
WITH FLOATING SLEEVE
The Best System Available
For Long-Term Stability
Where a rod monument is to
be used for precise vertical
measurements, the top section
is encased in a grease-lled
plastic sleeve, thus isolating
the rod from any movements
of the surrounding soil. The
sand backll also helps in this
process.
A stainless steel datum point
is usually used instead of a
domed cap and an access
cover would usually be tted
to protect the mark.

ROD MONUMENTS
Drive Until Refusal, Then Cut
To Fit
Rod monuments are a series
of stainless steel or aluminum
rods, usually 3 ft. (915 mm)
long, that are driven into
the ground either until they
reach refusal or when stable
ground has been reached.
A domed cap is then tapped
straight onto the rod.
The rod can be cut at any
stage if refusal is reached.
ROD
MONUMENTS
Preserve the accuracy you work
hard to achieve. Berntsen
sectional rod monuments can be
extended to any depth desired
for any level of stability and
accuracy. All of our sectional rod
monuments come with our
exclusive vibration-resistant
thread that keeps the rods tightly
together while driving. Our most
stable driveable monument and
sleeved rod monuments will
move less than a millimeter in
any direction over several years.
Standard rod monuments are
usually driven in until they reach
refusal or until stable ground has
been reached. They are still
subject to some movement as
surrounding soil swells and
shrinks with temperature change.
Top Security Rod Monuments
are the same as the standard rod
monuments, except that 3
aluminum ns are added to the
top section to improve stability.
These monuments are generally
used with a benchmark access
cover and backll, and may be
set deeper.
The NGS-style Sleeved Rod
Monument with oating sleeve is
our most stable driveable
monument. The grease-lled
sleeve allows the soil around the
upper part of the monument to
expand and contract without
affecting the rod’s vertical
location. When driven to refusal
and set as directed, long-term
testing has shown that sleeved
rod monuments will move less
than a millimeter in any direction
over several years.
