6.5 Trailer ABS Wiring Details
Trailer manufactures are recommended to provide a minimum of 9.5VDC to the trailer
ABS unit through both the brake light power circuit and the ignition power circuit to
ensure adequate power is available for trailer ABS needs. See TMC RP-141 for more
details.
The power, ground and ABS warning lamp wiring is typically integrated into the trailer
chassis wiring harness at the OEM. However, retrofit and some small OEM installations
will require these wires to be added to the trailer system. Wire size must be selected
based on ABS active power needs and the length of the vehicle. When using add-on
power and ground wires, the power and ground connections should be made as close to
the nose of the trailer as possible. Bendix strongly recommends against the use of a
trailer frame or chassis ground for the ABS unit or trailer-mounted ABS warning lamp.
Power and ground wiring should be disconnected while performing any welding on the
vehicle.

Table 16: Trailer ABS Wiring Requirements
6.5.1 Power from Tractor
Trailer manufactures are recommended to provide a minimum of 12.5 VDC with
a 10A load on the ignition wire at the front of the trailer. The tractor must also
provide sufficient brake light power to the trailer as a back up to the ignition
power. See TMC RP 137A for more details.
6.5.2 Warning Lamp Wiring
It is recommended to use 16 gauge wire or larger for the warning lamp circuit.
The warning lamp is powered via the TABS6 ECU. Ground must be provided to
the lamp using an individual ground wire. It is not recommended to use chassis
ground since this can promote failure of the warning lamp due to corrosion.
6.5.3 Twisted Pair
Wheel speed, modulator and data wires must be twisted conductors to reduce
any influence of electrical noise. At least one twist per inch is recommended.
