5.2.3 Wheel Speed Sensing
The error detection of this component can be of two different types static or
dynamic detection. Errors that cannot be detected statically are detected through
evaluation of the pattern of the wheel speed(s) (dynamically); the vehicle must
drive with a minimum speed, which depends on the detection method.
5.2.3.1 Static Wheel Speed Sensor Fault Detection
The TABS6 detects if there are any permanent or intermittent electrical
integrity issues affecting the wheel speed sensor circuits. The TABS6
decides if the issue may cause any degradation of the ABS performance.
If so, then TABS6 will either select a partial operating mode or switch off
all control functions. With this fault, the TABS6 illuminates the trailer-
mounted warning lamp and broadcast the diagnostic message over the
diagnostic data bus if possible.
5.2.3.2 Dynamic Wheel Speed Signal Characteristic Fault Detection
5.2.3.2.1 Large Air-gap or Wheel Drag (Frozen Brake)
The TABS6 detects if any wheel is failing to register any
wheel speed if the other wheels have been moving
greater than 9.3 MPH (15km/h) for 15 seconds. This
fault can only be detected on wheels that are not
configured as lift axles. With this fault, the TABS6
illuminates the trailer-mounted warning lamp and
broadcast the diagnostic message over the diagnostic
data bus if possible.
5.2.3.2.2 Tire Size Deviation
The TABS6 monitors if the wheel diameter differences of
the wheel ends are within the ± 8% range. If a difference
is within this range, the wheel speed calculation is
adapted automatically, and the learned values are stored
and reloaded after the next power-on cycle. If a
difference is out of range, the TABS6 illuminates the
trailer-mounted warning lamp and broadcast the
diagnostic message over the diagnostic data bus if
possible.
5.2.3.2.3 Sensor Signal Drop out
The TABS6 detects if any wheel has a sudden loss of
wheel speed information for a specific amount of time,
with or without an ABS event, as long as vehicle speed
is present. With this fault, the TABS6 illuminates the
trailer-mounted warning lamp and broadcast the
diagnostic message over the diagnostic data bus if
possible.
