3.1.5 ECU Power Circuit
The power circuit consists of permanent power input, a common ground and a
brake light power input for backup as required by FMVSS 121. With constant
power, electrical power to the ECU is present whenever the ignition switch is in
the “on“ position.
Once a minimum voltage of 8.5 V has been achieved, the ECU will initiate full
ABS function at levels between 8 volts and 16 volts. If system voltage is less than
8.5 Volts during the power-up sequence, the warning light will come on until the
system voltage reaches this minimum. If the voltage does not reach 8 Volts for
20 seconds, the warning light will stay on and the ECU will set a low voltage fault.
The common ground is shared with the other trailer electrical systems. Brake
Light power provides back-up power as well as a power input for older tractors
(no provision for permanent power to the SAE J560 connector) to the ECU.
Brake Light power is only supplied when the brake pedal is depressed and the
stop light switch is activated.
The ECU is protected against the following:
• Reverse Polarity
• Electrical Static Discharge (ESD)
• Load Dump
• Jump Start
• Electrical Transients
3.1.6 Communication Data Links
3.1.6.1 SAE J1587 Diagnostics
The TABS6 Premium ECU provides a data link for diagnostics and is
implemented according to the recommended practice of SAE J1587.
The data links are fully compatible with SAE J1708 recommended
practice for serial data communications.
3.1.6.2 SAE J2497 PLC Communications
The TABS6 Standard and Premium ECU provides a data link for
transmitting information over the power line per the recommended
practice of SAE J2497.
PLC is a bi-directional, serial communications link over the ignition
power-supply line among electronic devices to transmit and receive
messages between a tractor and trailer(s).
