Forum 523/524 in a
Serverless LAN
In a peer-to-peer network, the workstations are connected to one
another via network cables. In many networks, the cables run in
the form of a star from a central hub or switch. Such networks do
not require special servers. This configuration example is also
valid for a LAN with a server using a protocol other than IP (e.g.
AppleTalk or IPX/SPX).
The Forum 523/524 in a serverless LAN
In a serverless LAN, the Forum 523/524 takes over the IP config-
uration of the connected workstations. All IP settings necessary
for the workstations are assigned by the Forum 523/524 via DHCP
(dynamic host configuration protocol). In this operating mode, an
IP address space reserved for such networks is used:
Install the IP network protocol and a Web browser for every work-
station computer which is to have access to the Forum 523/524
network features.
