Checking chain sag ( 208).
Checking the chain wear
Requirement
Chain tension is set correctly.
Place the motorcycle on its
stand on firm, even ground.
Engage 1st gear.
Turn the rear wheel in the nor-
mal direction of travel until the
chain is tensioned.
Determine the length of the
chain underneath the rear
wheel swinging arm above
the middle of 10 rivets in 3
different places.
Permissible chain length
max 144 mm (measured from
the centre of 10 rivets, chain
pulled taut)
If the chain has stretched to the
maximum permissible length:
Seek the advice of a specialist
workshop, preferably an author-
ised BMW Motorrad Retailer.
