Atraumatic lumbar puncture
BD offers standard and Safe-T PLUS lumbar puncture with BD Whitacre atraumatic spinal needles. Atraumatic needles
are recommended for the following reasons:
Research has shown that atraumatic needles reduce postlumbar puncture headache (PLPH) in lumbar puncture and
myelogram patients.
5
The American Academy of Neurology recommends atraumatic needles for lumbar puncture procedures vs traditional
cutting needles.
6
The pencil-point configuration in the BD Whitacre atraumatic needle is designed to spread dural fibers, helping minimize
cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) loss and incidence of PLPH.
Safe-T PLUS and standard lumbar puncture trays
BD lumbar puncture trays, available in adult and pediatric configurations, contain the components you need to measure CSF
pressure and collect CSF specimens. Atraumatic and standard needle lumbar puncture trays are available in Safe-T PLUS and
standard tray varieties with:
Clear-hub spinal needles to help allow 360° visibility.
Two-piece manometer, available in adult trays, for flexibility to use separately or attached.
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) patient prep solution included. (Do not use ChloraPrep patient preoperative skin preparation for
lumbar puncture or in contact with the meninges. ChloraPrep is not included in lumbar puncture or myelogram trays.)
Drug-free trays available.
Pink sponge sticks included in trays with BD Whitacre atraumatic spinal needles.
The atraumatic needle’s pencil-point design
is proven to reduce PLPH.
